I know there are other discussions already on here regarding this subject and I did try to go through them but I am going to start another one.  I found information that a dog is in heat for about 21 days?  I was just curious as to how long the bleeding part of this lasts?  And is that something they start on day 1?  I didn't notice anything yesterday but this morning woke up to there being spots on my floor and the bedspread where Molly sleeps.  I have never had a dog with this issue before because they have always been spayed as puppies, she is an older dog I got at the end of September and even if I did want puppies (which I don't) the reason the lady gave her too me was because she had some difficulties with her last litter and she wanted her to retire from being a mom.  I got her for free on the stipulation that I get her fixed and obviously don't breed her.  If anyone read my blog from earlier you will know that I have had a difficult time this past month and have not had the time or money to get her in to the vet.  She will be going as soon as possible.  I am just curious as to what to expect with her as far as the bleeding etc and how long from now until I can start to assume it will be safe for her to be out with the other dogs.

Hi Laura,

it usually last about 21 days, sometimes 14- 28 days. Usually occurs twice a year, 6-8 months in between.

2nd week is most fertile, once 3rd week have passed you're safe. If you have male dogs at home during these 3 weeks, prepare to loose some sleep. The constant whining and pleading from male dogs, your annoyed female will often get nose poked, her back covered in saliva, she may experience mood swings and snap at the boys. If you want to make this period a pleasant one for you and your female dog, consider sending your male dogs to your family for 2 weeks, it'll make your life so much easier. Diapers does keep your floor clean, walmart equate brand pads are your best bet, dispose them daily, some dogs do loose their bowel control during the heat cycle. The downside of pads is blood collection, it attracts male dogs and encourage them to dig in, diapers are not contraceptives, no Velcro can stop a corgi :)

Before your male dogs return, bring out the steam vac and give the house a good scrub down, stock up 6 bottles of 3% hydrogen peroxide to clean up the blood and urine marking. Good luck!
They usually start bleeding around day 7 and will continue until about day 14ish. Another thing to remember is many vets will not spay until a few months after the dog has been in heat. When they are in heat there is a high level of vascularization and therefore there is a lot more bleeding during the surgery. So plan on spaying in about 3 months. Humane societies usually do it for super cheap.
Yes, it usually last about 21 days but sometimes seems much longer. Mine usually bleed 1st and then again at the end. Be aware that she will attract other dogs so never let her out alone and make sure there are doors separating any males as I just had an oops litter when my male broke through the board in the cat door and he also can get through any gate so closed doors are needed. Check with your vet as to how long they want you to wait...but it should be awhile so if you haven't I would mark it on the calender:) Good luck and may the time pass quickly! If you do have males and a family member can take him...that would be good as the constant changing around so they can't get together is exhausting!
Ok so I am trying to figure out when it is safe to put Molly back out with the other dogs. I noticed her bleeding the morning of the 5th. Some of you say that is the start, someone suggested she might have already been in heat for around a week before that started. I separated her from everyone else on that day and now I am wondering if she is safe to put out or not. My parents are coming on Wednesday and may or may not be bringing their dogs, both are fixed so I am not worried about that, more that the room Molly has been staying in will be needed for them while they are here.
Hi Laura,

I’m no expert on females being in heat, but I know it was a real pain when Sally went into heat before we got her spayed! Even had to clean the walls because when she sleeps she would use the walls to lay against and with no tail…what a mess! Anyway, Sally was also given to me because she had troubles with birthing her pups. If you can find out what issues she had it would be good. I knew that she didn’t do well with surgery but thought it was because of the c-section and how long she was under. When we had her spayed we almost lost her because she had an issue she has with the anesthesia. The more information you can get the vet the better! Hang in there, it is so worth it!! :)
This is why I never have girly dogs!!!!! Sorry don't have any advice for you but thanks for giving her a furever home.
