Leo gets so much gunk in his ears. I clean them ever few days because it grosses me out. I assume because his ears are so open and big they collect all dirt. Whats the best and easiest way to clean them.

My pem always had dirty ears as a puppy, but he seems to have outgrown it. I use to use these but I'm sure there are cheaper/easier home remedies out there.

Jane, thank you. I can't believe I never though about pads. I have been using Q-tips and have always been weery of its effect. I'm scared some of that gunk is falling in his ears and that i might go too deep and that I can't get it all.
If they are always dirty, he may have mites or something. I'd have them checked. Mine both have very clean ears. I clean them every now and again, but rarely get much of anything on the cloth.

I'd have the vet look at him.
Lilly had dirty ears as a puppy, but it seems like now that she has more hair her ears are covered better and they don't get dirty. But I was using a long q tip and just being very very careful
If his ears are always dirty I don't think this is normal Quin's ears are super clean and i live in the middle of the desert and it is very dusty I would have his ears checked, do they smell bad also, stick you nose close to his ear and sniff, if so this could be a yeast infection my dog before Quin had a really bad problem with this and I took him to several vets one thought it was allergy's and finally I took him to another vet who said it was a yeast infection and that dogs almost never get ear mites, but maybe that is just in Arizona. I put the drops that the vet gave me in his ears and made sure to dry his ears after a bath and we never had any problems after that
Shiro used to get dirt in the ears a lot when he was a puppy. We just had to give him a bath every week cause his fur was so fine and fuzzy and collected all the dirt.
The best way to clean the ears is when you're giving a bath, get right in there with your thumbs, he'll love it!
Other way I did it, I'd put Shiro on a side so the ear is flat on the floor and then clean it out with a wet cotton ball. THat seemed to be the most convenient way.
When he's grown it won't be like this, I hardly ever have to clean his ears, unless it's very hot a dusty outside.
Our vet had told us that if pups ears are dirty its probably because there is an infection and also said that pups ears shouldn't be dirty. You may want to have your vet check it out.
Ginny's ears were always very clean, but I had noticed about a year ago that one of her ears was getting really dirty. I would clean it out with water and cotton balls, and the next day it would be gunky again. Turns out it was a yeast infection. Vet gave me some cleaner that you swoosh around down in her ear (she HATED it) and then some drops for it. Once it cleared up, we haven't had a problem since. It might be worth getting it checked out.
thank you for all the feedback. he's had a check up with the vet and they didn't say anything, but i didn't mention it. I'll ask them again.
How long ago was the check up? If they looked in his ears they should have been able to see if there was a problem. Usually with mites or a yeast infection they will shake their head and/or scratch their ears too.

I really think some of it just depends on the dog. Like I said my pem had dirty ears all the dang time as a puppy, but my cardigan has HUGE ears and his are always nice and clean. Certainly not a bad idea to double check with your vet though.
Kotas ears have always been really clean... The only time w clean them is after a bath... But that's mainly to make sure there is no water from the bath in his ears. I always say if you have a question about it... You can always call your vet office and they can usually tell you if you need to bring the pup in. I know that you definitely want to get medication for it if it is a yeast infection or mites. what color is the stuff that comes out when you clean his ears ? If it is really dark and thick... I would get it looked at. Especially if his ears smell. You shouldn't really smell anything.if it looks like a little bit of dirt... I would just give the vet a call to see if they think it might be a good idea to bring him in.good luck. Oh, and clean kotas ears out... We use makeup remover pads and wipe the ear out. you can buy them at the dollar store or any other store in the bathroom section.

Forgot to update. Leo's ears are OK. They were just dirty. He's got some of the biggest ears I've ever seen! We met another Corgi Monday at puppy class and his ears were very small.

Anyway, glad to know he's just a dirty puppy.
