not that common?
i have been wondering this, how come corgis are not that common? it seems every time i take teddy for a walk i am always asked "what kind of dog is that"? it dosnt bother me but now it surprises me when someone says "o my gosh! its a corgi!!!" then they usually say i want one and they learned something that day lol but it seems like everyones knows about other breeds, jack russells, beagles,labs, etc but when it comes down to corgis its like they are the odd ball because no one has seen then before. and does anyone know how they got to the US? not to sound dumb but google just gives me facts i alwready know about the breed.

I've found people either know he's a corgi and squeal with joy when they see him, or they have no clue and ask what kind of dog Sidney is.
It's much worse for my friend with the blue merle cardi, because inevitably people will compliment her on her cool aussie/daschund mix!

I actually had a vet assistant insist that my blue merle Cardigan was the twin of her dapple (which I've learned is actually the same as blue merle in a dachsund) dachsund. Even when I insisted that he was not a dachsund, and absolutely a purebred Cardigan, she could not accept it. Probably told her friends that she met a dapple dachsund that day. ;)

haha its funny when people see a corgi for the first time and they come up with a bunch of different dog breeds. i have been told teddy was a German shepherd mix or a mini German Shepard. a beagle dachshund mix with something else or because of his rare blue color, a corgi mix of some sort lol

thank you guys for all the wonderful info, it was just something i couldn't help but wonder and i must agree, i am glad that they are not so common as they are not the right dog for everyone. and then some over breeding and things like that could happen.
it is funny when people do know what kind they are get all high pitched and excited XD its even more funny to hear a big man with a deep voice say "aww he sure is cute! hehe :P

I don't see many other Corgis around here either -- but when I do, we squeal to a halt (if in car) or chase them (if on foot) to say hello. What I find really odd, though, is there appears to be a secret, underground Corgi society. I can't tell you how many people tell me they grew up with one, or their childhood neighbor had one, or their mother-in-law has one -- or, my favorite -- people come up to me and, sotto voice, say, "I have one at home." LOL. We need a secret handshake!

lmao! i agree, i think that would be awesome:P but i must admit i do the same, when i see another corgi i get all super excited and heck or high water i will go up to that person and talk to them about our adorable corgis!!

I have the 2 and I have only met 2 others and they were both just stopping on the way through. I like that they're not common and I think we need a secret hand shake too. I have also gotten what did I cross the basset hound with? OMG

As far as I can see, Corgis are the only breed that has its own social networking site (thanks, Sam!). What IS it that makes us so obsessed? Yes, for my tri, people ask me if he's part GSD and part dachsie! But those are people who don't know the secret handshake...

Corgi is a popular breed in Taiwan. I had three foreigners talk to me on the street about how they had Corgis back home! It is amazing how a Corgi will enable people to start a conversation with strangers.

Elizabeth, I would recommoned you to tell her to look up on the internet about Cardigans. There is a living proof right there lol! As a vet tech..I am kind of surprised that she didn't believe you. I was a former vet tech and I try to research every breed as possible. Even if they aren't classifed in the AKC. I was introduced to a breed called South Africa Borbel. If I haven't known I would assumed it was a mastiff crossed. It is fun to educate yourself with new breeds that you have come across.
