Hello all,

How many of you feed your little ones people food along with dog food?  Does anyone feed their corgi ONLY people food?

What kinds of people food do you give your corgi?  In lieu of dog treats, I sometimes give out pieces of chicken, cheese, and hard boiled egg.

What kind of diet is your corgi on?

I like to give a little bit of the evening meal once we are finished- Daisy loves fish- its a fork full each on the odd night...- I like a little apple & cheese here & there...  Daisy came froma puppy mill so her stomach is a bit funny so I only ever do a little bit of some thing...  I will give them sour cream (cats too)...  I gave my old dog peas with his diner & 1/2 bananna here & there as a treat...  For a corgi I will do 1/4 bananna with the little guy when he gets a bit bigger (3 months now)... Soon I will be doing training on the treadmill- that calls for peanutbutter...  The man we got the little guy off said to give him no human food but I think the odd fork full for training is great!!!
I hate to admit what bad dog owners we are :(   My hubby gives the girls get some table scraps on most nights.  His family used to just scrape the dinner plates onto a tray and mix it with kibble!  So we are awesome in comparison. As far as other foods go, Twinkie likes raw carrots, bananas and apples as treats too.

Mine are fed primarily dry dog food, but they regularly get cheese as a special training treat (outside recall training, getting nails done, etc).

I like to add something to their evening food about 4 or 5 days a week.  Sometimes they get green beans, pumpkin, or plain unsalted rice cakes (only 8 calories for a quarter of a cake!!!) if they are dieting.

Most of the time I'm adding protein.  I reduce their food by a tablespoon or two and add in some plain yogurt, cottage cheese, half a cooked egg, canned salmon, or sardines are the usual add-ins.   They love the variety.

I can tell you for a fact that I fed my Chloe table scraps plus her dry food and that caused her to be overweight!  An overweight Corgi is not cute and is painful for them.  I have Solomon now and I have kept him on the dry food with treats in between for being a good boy.  I am obsessed with being sure that he does not get overweight.  I saw first hand the pain that comes from being overweight.  I feel sometimes that maybe if I had not let her get overweight she could have spent a little more time with me on this earth.  That maybe it would not have so hard for her to get up and down those steps.  Sorry everyone, I don't mean to poo poo the idea of feeding them people food, but I will not make the same mistake twice!

I can certainly understand what you're saying, and can hear the heartbreak through your words. Regret is not fun to live with. If you read all of the posts, however, not everyone if feeding their dogs unhealthy people food. We may call it people food, but it's really just food, and a lot of people on here are feeding their dogs healthy vegetables and raw meats. Some foods outside of their dry dog food diet can be very good for them, and most dogs love and think it's a special treat. My dachshund in particular thinks carrots are candy. LOL

Believe it or not after I posted this I began to look at everything that people were feeding their babies and I really looked at what it was.  It was healthy stuff.  I could feed Solomon this stuff in his own bowl, not off the table.  Nothing is more horrible than looking thru a glass table a seeing a gator staring at you and you know how intense a corgi stare is!!!  Solomon has never had anything else but his dry food, so I would have to introduce that stuff slowly.  But I am paranoid that he will get fat, he has been fixed and I just want to be diligent about his weight!

The corgi shark. LOL I know that look well. I found an article that lists 10 nutritious people foods for dogs. Enjoy.

We checked the calories of the food we feed, and try to reduce the food intake by about what we are adding.   So if the food is 360 cal/cup and we are adding something that's 120 cal/cup, we reduce food by 1 TBS and add 2 or 3 TBSP of the add-in.

I keep different measuring cups right in the dish.  So Jack, for instance, normally gets 1/2 c AM and 1/2 c PM.    If I add some protein to his food, I will use 1/3 c instead of 1/2 c for the evening meal.  Makes it easy.

I mainly feed my boy raw meat. It could be called "people food" as it's usually trimmings from the restaurant I work in. I also save the trout skins that I peel from the fish that I cook (at work). I also scavange some scraps from plates - you'd be amazed the amount of food that goes into the trash! We use good ingredients so he gets bits of tenderloin, ribeye, bison, duck, salmon... I freeze all the bundles I bring home & thaw what I need. I cut it in to morsels put put a bit in his bowl twice a day. I use the Mini Zukes for treats & training. I use Taste of the Wild for kibble (mainly in his treat ball). I give him fish oil to supplement Omega 3. When I need to supply my own feed, i get Nature's Variety raw medallions. I usually have 2 or 3 bags so that I can mix up the meal plan a bit. I've also made my own mixes when I find stuff on sale; ground lamb, goat heart, kidneys... I've even made liver treats in my dehydrator.

When I'm prepping food at home he loves to try & be the boss of me & get a sample of whatever I'm cutting up. His favourite is broccoli stalk. You'd think he was getting marrow bone! Oh & he comes running when he hears the ice cube tray crackling! And he gets to prewash dishes...

OMG a Gourmet Corgi!!!  Wish I ate that good, your corgi should be an atheletic!!  LOL he sounds he eats really well and doesn't get bored from eating the same old thing

ya he's typical corgi & always asking for more ;-) so I have him on portion control. With all the tenderloin & ribeye he gets, he gets more than me! but it's just trimmings & sometimes I "dive" for it.

Even though we live in a trailer with a teensy yard & I am currently working 4 jobs, we still go out every single morning for at least a half hour (over a mile) & practically every night. So he gets lots of scamper time in. Summer more so with more terrain accesible (we live high up in the mtns) & long boarding!

(ps I eat a "species specific" diet also, so I have the energy  to keep up with him!)

Greta loves mangos, carrots, brocolli and oranges.  She gets the vegetables raw not cooked as treats.  Maya is not interested and so far only eats her dry dog food.  They both get a spoonful of pumpkin as a gravy.  The pumpkin has great enzymes and helps them feel fuller so they won't beg so much.
