We're learning to give Milo more healthy treats so he can lose some weight. I know rawhides, milkbones, and all the doggie cookies are very tasty for him. But, they tend to have higher calories.

Anyone ever bake some healthy dog treats?
Anyone give their dogs some fruits or healthy "human" food?

@Renata- me too!
We switched to Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul kibble. It got rated 5 stars out of a possible 5 for nutrition. Lots of pros and no cons. It also is only $$ out of $$$$ for cost. It's been great. Both Lucy and Rafa love it and they seem to be thriving––soft and shiny coats––and I just give them a few pieces instead of treats and they're happy campers. I reward them with this kibble, too. It seems to be keeping them at a trim and healthy weight. I have eliminated other treats, which often resulted in diarrhea. Check out the ingredients. I think you'll be impressed with the quality and price. We don't give our dogs people food, but we have lots of fruit trees, so they get a lot of fresh fruit. I adjust their meal portions depending on the amt of fruit they eat and also keeping an eye on their weight and making small adjustments as needed.
We just saw on the news (can't remember the channel) that it is not good to give dogs fruit, because it ferments in their stomachs!? (what about stomach acids?) They also had negative about veggies, but my boy loves carrots. ( he also knows the word). I guess the main gist of the news story is that human food is bad----dog food is good. I like the idea of veggies, though mushrooms do not go over well, Poopdeck does like most of them.
We don't give our corgis people food, however we do have an orchard and can't keep them away from the fruit. We've never had a problem in the 30+ yrs. we've been in our house. Knock wood! They're very partial to Fuyu persimmons, which are crunchy like apples.
I have a question. I give my 4 month old puppy eukanuba puppy food. For training treats, I use regular grocery store kibble I borrow from my lab. He gets maybe 10-15 pieces a day. Is there any problem with this? I'm not a health food fanatic but I don't want my puppy to get fat or have health problems. I do give him an occasional piece of pasta or bite of apple. He doesn't like carrot! He has to work for every treat. Nothing is free.
Check-ups from Costco for Tracker. Vet gave him thumbs up for clean teeth after a year on them.
What are Check-ups and where do you find them at Costco? Are they like Denta-sticks?

Our dogs love them! They are with the food and treats at CostCo
I wonder if Sonny would chew them! His teeth are terrible because he just hoovers up everything and does not chew. Lucky has great teeth because he chews. Ever see a dog hoover a baby carrot? I am waiting to have to do the hemleich (sp?) on hoover machine. I am trying to get to Costco, now I have a reason, at least for the Lucky dog.
You can steam them and cut them into little chunks.
Sophie loves carrots, apple slices, bananas, pear slices, pineapple, watermelon, blueberries, cherry tomatoes and green beans (esp. frozen --- we refer to them as "beansicles"). She helped clean up the floor this summer after a friend and I were blanching peas in preparation for freezing and about a cup's worth fell on the floor. She likes applesauce, too (I make my own -- easy to do). Plain yogurt is okay too ---commercially prepared fruit flavored yogurts have lots of sugar, unless you add fresh fruit to plain yogurt. Pretty much any fruit or vegetable is good EXCEPT NO GRAPES, RAISINS, ONIONS OR MUSHROOMS. Give in small amounts at first so you don't upset his tummy; fruit can have a laxative quality and you don't want any ill effects from that! Some veggies can cause gas and that's never a pleasant thing, either. Some dogs will eat only cooked veggies. Experiment and give him a little piece of whatever veggies you are eating as long as they are not slathered with butter or sauce. Sometimes it's the fact that you are sharing your food that makes it appealing to a dog.
who makes their own cookies and what are your favorites?
