Our 7 week old Pembroke Jase (JJ) is chewing on EVERYTHING; and I do mean everything. He chews on his toys, and he chews on shoes, chair legs, table legs, laundry baskets, bags... even found him attempting to chew on the bricks around our fireplace. 0_o

I know it is due to the fact that his teeth are still coming in, and he's chewing to soothe the soreness. So,I bought him several of the Nylabone brand chew toys designs for puppies, even ones that are flavored, and he'll chew on them momentarily and go back to something else he isn't allowed to chew on.My question is what chew-stoping aids has anyone used that have been successful? Also, how do I get him to actually chew on his toys?

I remember going through this with our previous Corgi but not until 6mos when she was getting her adult teeth. I'd really like to get him in the habit of chewing on his toys before his adult teeth come in and he really starts to destroy things. Help!!

Thanks for the update! We let JJ chase a 1liter bottle around the other day after we rinsed it out and removed the label. Since it was so big and his mouth is so small he couldn't really get ahold of it with his teeth but chasing it kept him occupied and entertained while we cleaned up the house a bit.

The only toy we are leaving him alone with at the moment is the Kong Wubba that's coated in the thick fabric and the all time puppy favorite ball in a sock.

Grannick's Bitter Apple Spray: http://www.amazon.com/Grannicks-Bitter-Apple-8oz-Sprayer/dp/B0002DH...

I used this when Charlie was a puppy and also liked to chew random things. The worst was wires; laptop wires, tv wires, and it's not just a nuisance, but it's very dangerous for him too!

Alot of users on mycorgi recommended it so I tried it and it WORKS!!!! So I sprayed everything!!! It wears off after a few days, so you can respray if he keeps going back, but the idea is that he will associate that item (ie wires) with the bad taste of the spray. It's safe to use and natural.

I also used this on my feet when Charlie had those razor sharp puppy teeth and was always biting my feet when he got excited. Yep; i'd spray my feet, my toes, etc. It works!

Your puppy will outgrow it and leave those items behind as well, once you've trained him to see them as bad tasting. Charlie stopped chewing random things and played only with his toys around 6 months old.

Also, your puppy might just have sore gums from teething, and in that case, I always recommend a wet towel, rolled into a ring, and frozen. They enjoy this alot, as it's something textured to chew but it's also cold and it will numb their sore gums.

I do use free and clear lanudry detergent but I use Bounce sheets in the dryer; will this give the rags a funny taste? And would it be harmful for him??

Thanks a lot. I'll really have to order that spray. I really hope that I can get him out of this habit earlier than 6 months.

It's fine to try it, and it definitely works for some dogs.  Just so your expectations are realistic, though:  for puppy Jack it only would work while the spray was wet (maybe 1 to 2 minutes).

My Madison thinks it's a lovely condiment.  Adds a nice piquancy.   :-)

So try it, hope it works, realize it might not.

Yuki, Ellie, and my cat also ignored bitter sprays.  My mother's dog, however, wouldn't touch anything that had been sprayed.  It's hit-or-miss, in my opinion.  Still worth a try, though!

Yeah Luke was deterred by that spray for about 5 minutes, lol. Also keep in mind it does NOT wash off your hands easily. So don't be like me and make tacos for dinner right after...

Tee-hee!

Oh I'm sure those tacos did not taste like you expected...

Puppies are a test of our patience and creativeness. Just remember that anything your pup destroys is your error! She doesn't know any better.

Yep, that's what I told myself when Jack ate part of my windowsill in my then 10-month old house.  :-(
