In our search for a corgi addition to our family, my husband and I met a very sweet corgi mix at a shelter yesterday. She is 3yo and was given up by her family because they could no longer care for her and their other dog. We really like her, but we were wondering about her shedding.
She was shedding A LOT. We realize that corgis shed, but I was wondering if this is a typical big shedding time as they are building their winter coat? I also was thinking she may have been shedding more because she is under a bit of stress being in a shelter and she probably hasn't been brushed at all since she has been there.

Hi Liwa,
Stress shedding is really common, I would think, in her situation. My dogs and cats shed like mad when they realize they are going to the vet!

Sidney, my PWC, is shedding normally (which is minimal, thankfully!), but my corgi mix Bruce (he's corgi and Norwegian Elkhound) has been shedding so much!. Big old clumps of undercoat. And he HATES to be brushed! Sidney, who does not really need brushing, loves it. Go figure, right?

I think a good brushing/grooming would clean her up nicely :)
It could be stress, it could be shedding and it could also be poor dogs food! It might be a combination of all 3! I used to just brush my dogs but I broke down and got a furminator! What a great investment and I got mine online new for I believe 13.99 , a far cry from $40-60! I am very happy with it and so glad I got it!
Is she spayed?

Intact females will shed based on their heat cycle. And a recently spayed female will shed.... and shed... and shed. We got Maddie spayed on 10/27/09 and she is still blowing coat like crazy. She's nearly done, but at this point she looks like a plucked chicken.
Stress really makes them shed but be warned they are big shedders. They are well worth it but there is plenty of hair.

Yes, I have gotten a big handful off of Maddie every single day for the past month! I don't know where they hide it all! LOL

I just used the "Rug Stick" to clean my area rug for the holidays, and even though we just vacuumed, I got three or four interesting long ropes of hair, brushed out of the rug.

I have come to find all the hair endearing.
