I was just looking into buying a second PWC puppy from a breeder, and just found out that prices are way more than I ever anticipated.  I'm talking $1,500 per puppy.  Now, I realize that producing quality dogs to breed standards is very costly and that breeders don't really make much money on their puppies, but this seems very expensive.  I bought my current corgi from a responsible breeder located in OK (I was living in the midwest at the time) just two years ago and he was $900 (which I thought was just about right for the price).

Are the prices just that much higher b/c I live on the east coast near Boston?  Can anyone from the general vicinity confirm or negate this seemingly high price?

Yes, prices in certain parts of the country are higher. Why? Well, as far as I can tell, just because they can be.

When we got Jack 3 years ago, he was $1200. Another local breeder was asking $800 for pups at that time, but had none available.

I talked to a breeder in New Jersey last year who was charging $1800.

So, I'd say $1500 is mid-range for a show-bred puppy in the northeast. If you want a working/farm-bred pup, the price would probably be about half of that.
Wow, that is expensive! Yikes. I'm just thinking that if the puppy herself costs $1500, add to that puppy shots, spaying, etc and all the other things that go along with a new puppy. I looked into rescues, but sometimes it's hard to find a good match, and I'm really looking to add another dog now and not in 10 months. Maybe I'll just have to suck it up :)
Usually on the east and west coasts it runs higher. Midwest is usually less. I charge 900 for mine, hips, elbows, eyes, vWD, cardiac cleared and DM free. I think some people have too high of a value on what they have, really. Just sayin'.
Wow!! I really must say that Jordan was 450 limited reg. from a hobby breader that showed her own and trialed them in a herding area also. Teagen was 300 from what I quess most people would refer to as a back yard breeder but the lady was wonderfull and only had the mother and father of the litter. The most I've seen a fully clearenced PWC for around here is 800.00 in the Portland Or. area. I will say though that I wouldn't own this breed for 1500.00 dollars and somebody who's dirt poor could love and take care of an animal better than somebody with a incredile salary..
My guy was $550 from what you refer to here as a hobby breeder with limited registration in California.

I, personally, couldn't be happier with my choice. I can't see spending more than about $800 on a pet. There are so many other dogs out there that need homes and can love you just the same!!!!
it appears we have puppies from the same breeder. I have sent a message and friend request to you. My Tasha was born on 3/7/10 and I too only have limited registration.
wow, i got kirby for $500 from an accedental breeding of two akc reg pems, guess i got lucky....corgis are rare up here in alaska, most of us have to ship them up here and it ends up costing $1200.... we only have one breeder that i know of that actully lives up here and her breedings are rare
If it helps at all the cost of living is higher on the east coast too.
That is true. Land costs more and mortgages are higher, so vets charge more and items cost more, and everything that goes along with it.

Some of it, too, is what the market will bear. You can get a good-quality hunting puppy from field champion lines, with health-tested parents, for around $600 to $800 in the same market that Corgis are going for $1200 in. Not sure why, but there you have it. :-)
I live in Rhode Island just a little more than an hour away from you and when we started looking for a puppy (we lost our wonderful "Otis" in the summer)in the fall of 2009 I too could not believe the prices in New England. We decided to look on the internet and after alot of research we decided on a breeder form Indiana and we now have "Rocky". It was cheaper to have him flown here ---cost of puppy, crate & flight was cheaper than any corgi in New England
I live in Texas and just picked up my puppy from the breeder for 350, the females were 400. He was very healthy, had been dewormed and had his first puppy vaccination. She gave me the packaging for the vaccine too so my vet would know exactly what brand the shot was and everything. I got the paper work to send into the AKC too if I want to do that. Most of the puppies I found around Texas were about 800 or so, so I'm glad I got such a good price for him. My sister lives up in Boston and it seems like everything up there is more expensive so maybe pups are too
i want another pup in about a yr.. when Carly gets to be older. i sure hope i can find one for under five hundred
