So, about four weeks ago, just 3 days after I got Frank, he had severe diarrhea (like water) and started vomiting. After looking it up online I immediately rushed him over to the vet in fear that it was parvo. Thankfully the tests came back negative and they simply felt it was a bacterial infection and put him on some prescription food. As soon as he was done with that food, I put him back on the food the breeder had given me-- the diarrhea started back up. I switched his foods, and everything was fine-- solid poops and a healthy dog.

Well yesterday, after a day of being his hyper self running around and being a nut, he got diarrhea-- not too bad at first, but quickly got severe. Then the non-stop throwing up began.. I honestly lost count of how many times he vomited. I called the vet in a panic and after he threw up just water, I rushed him over there. They did all sorts of tests and injections but couldn't really pinpoint a cause for this behavior. He's at home and fine right now but my heart breaks and I'm an emotional wreck watching him go through this. Has anybody had similar behavior with their corgi or any suggestions or advice they can offer me? I would deeply appreciate it, thank you! <3

So sorry....when you switched him back did you slowely change him over mixing the food???? otherwise you will need to go back to the old food a(vet) and start again...also if he had this before I would look at this may be a good time to switch....maybe his tummy can't handle the food he was on? I recently had to take bella off chicken and give her lamb.

Yes, I did.. and his digestive system has been perfect for the last 4 weeks, until yesterday. I thought I pinpointed the problem once we switched foods from the food the breeder started him off on (natural balance) to Royal Canin and he reacted better to the Royal Canin about 3 and a half weeks back. He is now back on the prescription diet as of yesterday and the vet suggested he may be the type of dog that needs to stay on that forever (the i/d gastrointestinal health prescription diet-- soft food that comes in a can).

Thank you so much for your reply!

Been there done that!!!!!  Maybe wait awhile and try introducing a different dry food for period of weeks, like an 1/8 cup with his other food? I wouldn't quit trying once he's doing better even if you can get it to 1/2 and 1/2 without him getting sick would be less costly... maybe try a different protien also Good Luck!

Ah, thank you so much-- I could cry due to how appreciative I am of your help! I've always grown up with dogs but they've never had problems like this, especially at such a young age. It just worries me. Frank's the first dog I'm raising on my own and I'm just so overprotective and paranoid when it comes to him.

So you suggest mixing the dry foods, i.e. the Royal Canin with a different dry food? And just wean him off of the soft prescription food by mixing in the royal canin gradually?

Thank you again for your help!

Why are you trying to switch his food? Our doberman eats Science Diet i/d with no problems but when I have tried to switch her (slowly) to better rated foods we end up with terrible diarrhea.  So we are sticking with the prescription food. Not all high rated foods are the best choice for your dog. Maybe whatever you are feeding is too rich for him. Hope he feels better soon. ( the food does come as dry kibble too)

It's not that I'm trying to switch him, but he ate the last dry food for 4 weeks without any problems whatsoever-- until yesterday. I was just concerned that it was something more serious than the food he was on, i.e. the constant vomiting-- which I wouldn't think is normal for a dog who has finished an entire bag of food and all of a sudden is sick. I am not implying at all that the high-rated foods are the best choice for him-- that's just one of the types of food my breeder gave me so I used it and he adapted to it very well-- why all of a sudden is there a problem a month into eating it? That's my whole problem. If I have to keep him on the prescription food I have no problem doing it, as long as he is happy and healthy.

Thank you very much for your well wishes and help!

Wow, thank you SO much for that breakdown. I can't even express my appreciation. I've heard of the pumpkin thing before and I'll definitely by some for back-up. And I'm definitely going to pick up the probiotic for him as well. I'll check out those foods, too. I just definitely want to get to the bottom of what's causing this-- I hate to see my baby in pain :( I thank you so much again-- such a great help! It's great to know I can come here for help!

No, not at all! I appreciate the details. I'm in the same boat as you, as my boyfriend isn't as involved as I am and all decisions regarding him are my call, and I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I will keep all of this info in mind, and just hope that it's something that he grows out of-- which like you said, I'm sure it is.

And Frank's been a nut since I've gotten home from work-- running around the entire house and playing and chewing everything in site, so he's pretty much back to normal.. just waiting on him to go potty, earlier it was a lot better. Thank you again! :)

How is Frank doing now?? Any more vomiting or diarrhea??
He is doing much better, thanks so much for asking! I was just home on my lunch break and he had his appetite back and was running around like normal. It's amazing to me that one minute he's hospitalized, and the next playing like nothing ever happened. Here's too hoping he stays in such good spirits!
I have no suggestions for you, but I just wanted to say I'm sorry you are going through this. :(
My Malamute was going through seemingly random bouts of vomiting a GI distress until we pinpointed it to a plant growing in our back yard. The other two dogs never bothered the plant, so they weren't getting sick. The seemingly randomness of the Illness had us stumped for weeks.

Good luck, I know how frustrating and scary it is when a fur baby is sick!
Thank you so much. Yes, I feel as if I'm gonna go crazy until I find out what's causing this, just because I'd hate for him to keep going through this. I deeply appreciate your concerns, it helps knowing I'm not the only one who has gone through this.
