Hi all,

Here I am with leg issues again. So last summer Milly slipped on the tile floor and hurt her left leg. However, months before that I noticed that she was slow to get up after standing/playing long. Well with glucosamine and chondriotin and fish oil her leg was better but she is still slw to get up and sits or lies down very quickly instead of standing. Last night, she was full of energy and has a fap in the yard. I brought her in and she was absolutely fine, no favouring her leg or limping. This morning however, she couldn't put her leg down, it's the right one now. I had to work but my daughter said that when she was outside, she would favour the leg but would put pressure on it. They even went for a short walk. This evening she can not se her leg again. I just gave her an anti inflammatory and she's keeping now.

I guess I have a few questions. Last year the doc first thought she tore her acl but there was no firm diagnosis. Does that injury always show up right away or after a nights rest? If she is starting to have arthritis, would a chiropractor work? If so, does anyone know of one in Mississauga? I can't travel far because my dad s in hospital again so my time is very limited.

Finally, I have very little anti inflamatories left. I read that I could give her baby aspirin. What s the best thing to give her to make her comfortable?

Thanks!

An ACL tear is not always all the way torn. Could be a partial tear and doesn't really show up in x-rays. Usually the vet can tell by manipulation but sometimes they have to put the dog under in order for them to relax enough to tell. You might want to get a second opinion.

I haven't taken to her to the vet yet for this most recent injury. That will be on Monday. I don't know if I will have enough anti inflammatory meds until then? Could I use something else? Also any experience with chiropractic methods?
Bayer low dose aspirin (81 mg tablets). I think one tablet every 12 hrs. If you have a pet sitter or doggy daycare in your area, they may offer services such as taking your dog to and from medical appointments.

I've seen positive results in the past when taking my corgis to a chiropractor.  However, for an ACL injury or arthritis I doubt that chiropractic would be of any value.

Sounds like it could be a partially torn ACL, I don't think a chiropractor would be any use in this situation. In cardigans it's not recommended to have a dog's back "adjusted" due to the possibility of IVDD, but I'm not sure if there is the same risk in pems.

If it's a torn ACL, and it wasn't repaired, then you definitely have arthritis setting in.  At this point, an anti-inflammatory would be your best bet--Rimadyl, Previcox are the most frequently given.

A torn ACL will show up right away, with the symptoms you describe.  The symptoms may ease, but will always return with exercise.  Seanna has torn both of hers.  The first was a complete tear, but no meniscus injury, and she wouldn't put any weight at all on it.  Her second was a worse tear, with a meniscus injury, but she would put weight on it and run around still.  If it's torn, it's best to have it surgically repaired.

Well it looks like we escaped again. Everything checks out ok and she is back to using her leg. Last summer with the left leg, we never got a firm diagnosis from the vet but it took a long time for her to stop limping. I think that maybe her vet is more of a gp rather than diagnosing real issues. I am going to ask for a specialist to look at her legs when we go in for her wellness exam in a few weeks. I have been telling the vet that she is slow to get up from sitting/laying down even when she is not over tired and she sits down all the time rather than standing for longer than a few minutes. She is only 5.5 so ths can't be normal.

This is the reason why I thought about looking into a chiropractor and hoping some of you have experience with that.

Thanks!
