It's been a while, but I remember that our breeder told us that corgis should not jump off furniture or use stairs until 2 years old due to possible back problems.
Shiro is 8 months old and has no problems with stairs, but we try not to use them when possible. He is very active and agile and loves to go on hikes and jump over roots and branches. I think he will make an excellent agility dog, but how early can he start doing jumps? If it's not advised to jump now, what elements can he do?
He also jumps in and out the bathtub daily to get some water. Is that OK?
Thanks!

I honestly don't know how you can keep a corgi from jumping...if they can jump up they usually jump down! I was careful with mine when they were young but by the time they turned 6 months there wasn't much I could do.
I was told that they should not be allowed to use stairs until they are at least 8 months old and should not be allowed to jump up or down from furniture until 12 months. All of these things could be a potential problem at any age though. Constant use of stairs can cause problems to appear when the dog is old as was the case with my inlaws’ Pembroke. We started letting Finn climb Stairs when he was about 10 months, but he hasn't figured out how to go down them. We never allowed him to jump on furniture so the up and down thing is not an issue. He's not a good jumper anyway so even the few times he's tried, he didn't make it up on the couch but we discourage him from trying nonetheless.
I was afraid Shiro wouldn't learn how to go downstairs if we didn't start early. So he's been going up and down ever since he was little, but only about once a week and very few steps.
I'm sure that's fine then. That's what we should have done with Finn and maybe now he would go down the stairs. I don't know if he doesn't because he's scared to or because his build prevents him from doing so. He's shorter than most and it seems like that combined with his length would make it hard to do. Who knows! :)
my corgis are 20 & 11 months and I honestly don't know when they started jumping. I am trying to convince my husband to build them stairs for the bed for Christmas. We keep an eye on them but they go up and down stairs to go outside & get on/off furniture
We waited at least a year. Everything else is free reign but when we can (and can catch them in time) we try to let them off furniture and such by putting them down.

You can't stop them 100% unless theyre trained to stay off the furniture but Im sure it helps to ease the impact.
Remember..these Corgis are medium bred dogs w/short legs. Full maturity isn't til about 3 yrs old but the greatest growing period between a yr and yr an a half w/maturity looks at 2 yrs old. Each dog matures differently and at different rates. Major jumping and impact from landing should be none to limited. We all know how our Corgis can be...so just try to monitor the activity. Treat them as a toddler...you would be right there on the stairs w/your toddler ready to catch them or steady them. My youngest Corgi which is a yr old now loves to leap in the air and flip all the way to catch the ball like she's a Border Collie..just because she likes to do this and is awesome to see, we do not allow it. We don't throw the ball straight up when she is around...just like I know they can do it and like to jump into the trampoline or the vehicle..we don't allow it. Yes, sometimes they are sneakier and quicker then our response.
Regarding agility, he should not be doing jumps, weave poles, or the big A-frame thingy til his growth plates close, usually around 1 year to 18 months but you can check with a vet to be sure as each dog is different. He can do tunnels and tubes, and also learn to run between standards as you direct him.

As for stairs, stairs are ok in small doses, usually. We try to limit how much our dogs do stairs even now, and it's one of many reasons why they are not meant to be allowed upstairs (but still sometimes sneak up).

Unless you strictly enforce a no-furniture rule, they will likely jump on couches, but a bed is probably too high and I'd be leary of the bathtub unless it's a small one; it's a confined area and very easy for him to skid either going in or out and wrench something.

The car is a toss-up and depends on the car and the dog. We have a Subaru. It's not that high. WIth Maddie, she's a large-end-of-standard 28 pounds and easy enough to lift carefully. Jack is big at around 37-38 pounds fit weight and does not like to be picked up. It's hard to pick him up and support his back end properly, and my feeling is we would be as likely to hurt him trying to carry him as we are letting him jump, so we let him jump in the car. He also rides in the back seat, though, which in our car is not too high.
Finnigan is also 38 lbs which is why we've started letting him go up the stairs on his own. We live in a second story apartment so there is no avoiding the stairs. He climbs them about 4 times a day but since he doesn't know how to go down, we still have to carry him that way. It just makes me nervous carrying him on the stairs because I'm worried I will trip and we'll both be tumbling down the stair. I twisted my ankle a couple times and almost went down. Yikes!
I waited until Philip was about a year old, we started Agility when he was 11 months or so, but he didn't do much real jumping until a couple months later. I don't let him up on the furniture at home, and he rarely encounters stairs.
Looks like I'm going to have to do something about bathtub, maybe steps. Although I don't know if he will use them. Sometimes he gets so excited after getting wet that he jums out very quickly and slides or twists. I might put a rubber mat in there, would be useful for me too.
He is not allowed on furniture although he can jump on the couch and will do sometimes it when no one is watching. Looks like this has got to stop.
I will wait a couple of months to do beginner's agility, with no jumps and serious stuff.
I've never heard any of this. I'm feeling like worst mom ever right now.

Bear has jumped on the couch since I can remember, when he was younger I always lowered the recliner footrest for him, but now he hops right up. And he loves the steps, he tries to race me up them - gets to the middle, stops and taunts me, and then runs up the rest of the way. ugh.
