milky mucus stool
Midas's first and only poop today at 1:30pm was covered in a milky mucus encasing. The first turdlet came out normal with nothing strange to see, the last two were encased like a sausage with a semi thick milky colored mucus. No blood that I could see but still alarming. I took a picture with my phone since it was the only thing I had on me at the time. Bagged it and brought it in to the vet. I'm supposed to get a call tomorrow morning once they get results back from the lab. If they don't find worms then they will need to do an exam. I'm a little nervous because I looked up some stuff and none was good. Has anybody else had this type of problem or maybe have insight? He is acting/eating/playing normal. The only thing that wasn't normal was that two days ago he vomited three times throughout the day and it was brownish liquid. I told that to the vet also. Either way they didn't seem too alarmed but I am.

Jack on rare occasion has mucus covered stool. It looks gross, but my understanding is this can be as simple as a dog eating something that does not agree with him. If it's just a one-time thing I would probably not be overly concerned. If it continues, or there is blood or diarrhea, then I would probably pursue it.
Since your pooch vomited, it doesn't hurt to get it checked out, as you are, but I would say try not to worry too much, as more likely than not it's only something he ate. I know, though, that it's hard not to worry about our furkids.

I've seen this happen many times, I wouldn't be alarmed.
Generally it's just because they ate something that didn't entirely agree with them, but if they're still acting like themselves, I wouldn't waste the time and money at the vet.

I had a dog do this years ago and I think I thought he/she had eaten part of a rabbit...not sure but whatever it was the dog was fine.

UPDATE: Got a call from the vet this morning and she said the stool was completely normal and she thinks he ate something while in the yard and that there was no need to see him. I don't know. I just think that it is pretty strange to eat something and have it end up looking the way it looked. But I will listen and not worry. If it happens again though I think I will demand possible blood work or at the very least and exam. I just don't see what he could have eaten while outside that would make his poo look like that. I mean, he is never off leash expect at the dog park and we hadn't been in a while and everything he eats outside is poop from other animals and dead worms. I watch and try to stop but that doesn't always go so well. I don't know, I guess I'm just baffled. But I am glad she said his stool came out just fine and I haven't seen that mucus since. Who knows, maybe it was something he ate....

Jack had this just yesterday, and we remembered he'd eaten a couple acorns.
Acorns make him very ill, and just a couple is enough to have his stool encased in mucus, like you said. It's not that uncommon. I know it looks alarming, but apparently if the dog eats something irritating his system secretes extra mucus to protect the digestive tract. Corgis, being so low to the ground, can grab something in a hurry and you won't even notice.
When I say "a couple" acorns, I mean he got one or maybe two before I stopped him.

Hi Zach & Lisa,
I know this is an old post but I was wondering if Midas ever had any more issues with this? Our little guy Stanley had a poop this morning that sounded like the one you described. He seems completely normal otherwise. I'll probably call the vet tomorrow to be on the safe side.

We have only had this happen one or maybe two more times. We don't worry about it anymore just because it will happen once and be done. Nothing else seems to be out of the ordinary with him. If there were then I think I would be more concerned. But it seems to only happen if he eats something strange for him normal diet. Good luck, hope all is well.

It could just be colitis (inflammation of the colon) caused by stress or something like that. Winston's had it twice, nothing too serious as long as you take him to the vet!
