Hello All!

We just got a cute little Pembroke Boy. His name is Wheatley and he is 11 weeks old today.

From what I have read Corgis are supposed to be very playful and inquisitive. I know that all dogs have their own personalities. But, he seems to be very shy. He is curious, but seems to always want to be within eyesight of us. He has slept a lot since he came home. He will run and play and then suddenly lie down, even outside, and fall asleep. I was wondering if we should be concerned.

I also noticed that he doesn't always finish his food. I have read over and over that Corgis are food driven and will eat more than their fair share, but Wheatley seems to be kind of finicky when eating.

We were also concerned because he doesn't seem very vocal. He makes "Happy Pig" noises. When we rub his belly or play, he will wag his rear and "oink", but he doesn't really bark.

He should be going to the vet tomorrow afternoon for his 3rd vet visit. and seems to be healthy, we just want to make sure he is okay.

Should we be worried about his behavior?

Thank you for any assistance,
AmandaFay & Brendan

First of all, congrats. Question: when did he actually join your household?

Saturday. I know he is VERY new to everything.  I just want to make sure he is happy and getting enough food.

All this is normal for new puppies like yours. He may not bark much til he's somewhere between 6 and 18 months and starts to develop adult traits. He'll continue to nap a lot until he's around 4 or 5 months old. MOST puppies keep you within sight and seem a bit uncertain when they come home. Believe me, we had one who did not and be happy that yours does! A puppy who is willing to wander off out of sight is a puppy who quickly gets into trouble.

You will see some changes within a few days as he gets more comfortable, and more as he matures. Good luck!

Our Miles just will be 11 weeks this Friday. We got him at 8 weeks. For the first 3 days he was hesitant to eat too (i had to hand-feed him). He doesn't have that problem now:) I give him 1.25 cup a day (break it in to 3 meals at 6 am, 12pm and 6pm). I'd give Wheatley a couple of more days to get used to his new 'pack'. He needs time to trust you and feel comfortable. He also needs to know his boundaries in your home. ..... just like kids:)

This is an intense time for you and the pup, but very rewarding. Have fun!

Your little guy is still an infant so it is too soon to see his personality in full. Puppies are often picky about food while they go through the teething process. He will make great strides in behavior during his whole first year. Enjoy, it goes by quickly!

Thank you all for the advice and confimation.

We are happy to know that our little guy is being a normal pup!

One more question:

The Place we got him from was giving them water with a bottle, similar to what you would feed a gerbil with . And he doesn't seem to understand the water bowl. I make it available to him all day. But he still licks leaves outside to drink the water. Will he get over this?

He seems to know the bowl has water in it because he puts his feet in it after he eats. Kinda like washing his paws.

Will he drink more as he get settled?

No worries. He gets thirsty enough - he'll drink from the water bowl (if that's his only option).

Hey, my corgi never barks, she just squeaks :) So don't worry about that lol

Well, in case anyone was wondering how he's faring:

Wheatley has found his voice. He barks very very occaisonally, we've heard it a couple times. He whines to go out, and still mostly makes the piggy noises.

He's okay with the water bowl now, but still likes to put his feet in it sometimes. I think it may have to do with seeing his reflection (it's a stainless steel bowl).

He's becoming a lot more of an explorer. But he still wants to follow me everywhere. Today he tried to leave his crate and follow me to the ladies' room at my office.

My Chase also puts his feet in the water bowl. He would put both feet in the bowl and push it around, getting water ALL OVER THE FLOOR. haha I had to buy one of those heavy weighted bowls but it doesn't really stop him. I just have to catch him in the act. I'm hoping this means he will like to play and swim in the water! :)

So corgi does that!!! My baby always put his paw in the bowl after he drank from it... That made my parents annoyed because after he got the floor wet he would roll himself there.....
