hello everyone. after watching animal cops on tv i realized that all the neglected animals that come in all have dental problems. now of course none of which happens on there will ever happen to my fur kids but it made me wonder, what can i really do to help their oral health if i cant get their teeth cleaned all the time and just lessen the chances of it happening to them?

i have always gotten complements from my vet and just friends about how shiny and healthy his teeth are. even when he got neutered they did a free teeth cleaning since the whole major the dachshund didnt work out. they said there wasn't much to clean but they were even more shiny and clean! lol

to help i went out and bought doggie tooth paste from "four paws" it came with a long tooth brush and a finger brush (i made it positive and he lets me brush his teeth as he knows he gets treats at the end of it lol hes such a good boy) i also got some greenies hoping to help him, along with a toy rope that has floss and spearmint flavor

is there anything else i can do help him out? he of course will get dental cleaning once or twice a year since he has pet insurance and it covers it

and yes he does eat hard kibble

thank you:)

Sounds like your doing a great job, just keep it up and Teddy will be with you a long time!
thank you:)
Just be careful with the rope that he doesn't eat it. They are a major cause of intestinal blockages.
of course, i always supervise when ever i give him something:)
It's good that you're so concerned about your dog's teeth! Waffle has pretty white chompers, too. For your dental plan, there are two caveats:

1) Kibble cleans teeth as well as cheerios clean human teeth! So, don't let that stupid "Helps clean teeth" adage trick you. It doesn't.
2) I've read a lot about how Greenies swell up in the dog's stomach/intestinal track and cause blockages and death. There have been several news reports about the danger Greenies may pose. CNN lists 13 deaths but there have been many more than that. I would recommend against using Greenies because of this.

I'm too lazy to brush Waffle's teeth, haha. I find giving him an antler or raw beef bone does wonders to get the tartart off. :3
haha thank you. im such a worry wort so anything i can do for them i will:) i have also heard about that with the greenies product and from what i found it was their old formula that was causing it and the new formula should be fine. it said to test wether or not it is the new formula, i drooped it in a tub of water and after a few hours it should be mussy and falling apart and it was but of course if its bad for teddy im not going to give it to him
I don't use greenies because they contain soy, which sketches me out. I am one of those people who is all about NEVER feeding her dog corn, wheat, soy, or any of the other grains we have genetically modified into poison. (funny thing is I am not as hyper alert about it for myself... lol just my dog and cat)... I have found these treats I LOVE.. Bright Bites (http://brightbites.com/) which are a healthy alternative to greenies. PLUS they are less calories which I like because Tegan is a corgi and tends to plump up if you give him even one more piece of kibble than usual lol!
As far as everything else you sound like you are doing a GREAT job! Most people NEVER brush their dogs teeth, give them oral treats that actually do anything, or even look in their dogs mouth. I work at a vets and we see some gnarly looking teeth come in for cleanings/extractions, and it's sad because all you really need to do is brush the teeth once in a while and keep an eye on them and most of it all can be prevented.... :-/
thank you:) i really do try my hardest to keep them healthy and i have have always heard "brush your teeth and your dogs to teeth" i have always knew it was important and if i can prevent anything to keep them healthy which is brushing his teeth then i am ok with it:) lol he actually dosnt mind at all that i brush them. he has always been a very patient dog and is the same when it comes to cutting his nails. i tell him to relax and he lets me cut his nails and now i brush his teeth. but a few treats dont hurt either ;) lol the weird thing is i am too one of those people who wont feed their dog anything that isnt natural. his treats are home made or fruits and veggies and his main food is wellness. but i guess when i was out buying all the dental care stuff i got over excited and forgot to read the ingredients on the back. i think ill just have them around but i will definitely order the product you showed me, thank you for the link too!
i have tried that once but he gets nervous if i do it to long and he actually likes the tooth brush so as long as his teeth are clean im happy:)
Rebecca, You inspired me to brush Izzy and Misty's teeth! Sparty saw me coming and ran, the big baby!
how long do you brush? I just got a finger brush and some chicken flavored tooth paste...but I've got 3 corgis to do...
for abut a minuet or two:), i make sure i sure i scrub back and forth first and then i do circles to make sure i get everything on top and bottem. then i put on the finger brush and go over his tongue to freshen his breath lol
