Sydney was spayed today around noon and has now been home with me for about an hour and a half. When the vet handed her over to me she was shaking in her corgi boots and she still is! I feel so bad! Is this normal? I mean, I guess it has to be pretty traumatizing. Also, her stitches are looking kind of gross- is it normal for them to bleed a little the first day? I'm probably being a bigger baby than she is about this! Any feedback would be great. Thanks!

Im not sure, is your vet still open now? If so, I would call them and see what they say about this. I am really curious why Sydney was shaking when they handed you her at the vets and still continues to shake at home?
I don't really know but it could be due to the trauma of surgery. Do you have an after hours number to call? Your vet should be able to answer your questions. One of my corgis had stress induced colitis after her spay. She always was really sensitive. Sydney is probably fine but call just to make sure.
She's actually calmed down now- she's sleeping finally. They said she was afraid and shaky the whole time she was there. I guess she's super sensitive. I'll definitely call tomorrow if she's still acting strangely. But about the minimal blood- that's to be expected right?
Teagen's incision didn't bleed at all after her spay 2 wks ago but she was cold and shaky we moved her crate in front of the heater vent and covered it with a blanket. Did they send you home with any painkillers for tomorrow?
the painkiller was Rymadill and she had 3 days worth.
Glad she has calmed down. Poor girl. Dried blood doesnt seem to concern me as much as if it were fresh blood. Just keep an eye on it. Make sure to keep her from jumping and running like crazy to prevent any damage to the healing area. Wishes for a fast and speedy recovery. :)
I would call too...just to make sure.Sometimes people get cold after surgery and so I would keep her in a warm(not hot)place also, she might just be feeling weak and scared from the whole procedure. Has she eaten and drank anything? I can't say that I remember any of mine bleeding, is it wet blood or dried blood...if it looks like it's still bleeding you need to call the vet now!
Maddie didn't bleed at all after surgery. Well, I don't think she did, but since she refused to move at all I guess I really didn't get a good look at the incision for several hours after I brought her home.

The shakes could maybe be from the morphine; females get heavy duty pain drugs and some people and presumably dogs react badly to them, and to anesthesia.

The wound can open up and bleed (actually for several weeks after the surgery), so keep a close eye on it. If it's oozing a bit in the area where the stitches enter the skin, I would not worry too much as long as it stops shortly. But if it continues to bleed or the incision itself is bleeding, I'd call.
The vet didn't even mention painkillers. And I also read that some vets will give an antibiotic, which he didn't mention either. Humm. And it was a tiny spot of blood- it actually got on my carpet. It's stopped now, but I still think it's kind of strange that happened. I'll definitely call the vet first thing tomorrow if she's bleeding/shaking/etc. Like I said, I'm probably being the bigger baby about this! Thanks for all the replies.
I know all vets do things differently, so I might call and ask my vet exactly what he gave her. Some vets will give a pain shot that lasts 24 hours, some will give Rimadyl pills, and some won't give any pain medication unless you ask for it specifically. My Sky reacted very similarly to his nueter surgery. He sat in his crate and wouldn't fall asleep, peed on my carpet and in the car (his first EVER accidents), and cried and cried. It was awful. My dogs have never gotten antibiotics before/after surgery. I wouldn't want my dogs on antibiotics unless they were sick. The antibiotics actually kill all the good bacteria in the system, so if your dog isn't sick you are just killing their immune system and making them more likely to get ill with something.

The blood is the only thing that would worry me. I would just keep a close eye on it, and if it still seems like it seeping blood tomorrow, I would call in. Just keep her still and give her lots of love and she'll make it through okay. Good luck!
I have never had a vet give my dogs antibiotics for a spay and I've had several done! Painkillers I used once or maybe twice with each dog...depends on the dog. As long as she's not showing signs of pain/discomfort...although pain could cause her to shake also.
For the life of me I can't find Maddie's spay record, which is annoying the heck out of me.

I believe we had about 3 days worth of Rimadyl and 3 or 4 doses of antibiotic. We did not have antibiotics for Jack's neuter, but did for Maddie's spay. A spay is a major surgery (uterus and ovaries are removed) compared to neuter, which is easy for a puppy with both testicles descended.

Jack popped out of the neuter on his toes like nothing happened, but Madison was in quite a lot of pain after her surgery and we did give her the Rimadyl for about 36 hours afterwords. That first night she had to be coaxed outside to pee, and the next morning she was barely moving. After about two days she perked up.

Of course, she was nearly five and had a litter with a C-section already, which may have made things a bit more difficult.
