Rexx just found a baby possum (looks like anyway) about 6 inches, he is throwing up in the air. I couldn't for the life of my get him away to save it. I feel very bad. Can he get ill from it.

Did he eat it or just kill it? If he didn't eat it, I wouldn't be too worried. Frosty found a nest of baby rabbits a couple months ago and ate half of them before I found out (totally gross!!). If you are really worried, I would recommend calling your vets office and discussing it with them over the phone. They should be able to tell you if there is anything you need to keep an eye out for and the advice won't cost you anything. Don't feel bad, it's a dog thing, and there is nothing you can do about it. Just in the last 2 months, Frosty has killed the baby rabbits, 2 shrews and a mole in our fenced in front yard. Luckily, he was so proud of the shrews and mole that he let me have them instead of trying to eat them!
I wouldn't worry too greatly. My old collie would catch/partially eat raccoons, porcupines, large birds, etc and my corgi/dachshund mix used to eat dead rabbits that she stole from the cat. It may upset their stomach but I wouldn't worry greatly. I'd say contact the vet and talking to them like Chris said.
Dh told me it was a mole.
A mole? I'd say as long as you haven't left any rodent poison out that the mole could have eaten, I wouldn't worry too terribly much.
You have to be careful if you are dealing with adults, a lot of wild animals are rabies carrier.
I thought it was a baby possum though I have heard that mama keeps them in her pouch so I did wonder. Rexx was throwing the poor thing up in the air, he didn't eat it. I didn't get too close because I didn't want Rexx to throw it on me. DH went out to dispose of it and told me it was a mole. I thought moles were bigger but now I think back it was surely a mole.
Misty (doberman) catches stuff all the time in our back yard and has never gotten sick yet. She does get her regular flea preventative though. I always make her drop it and take it away. Fortunately the corgis only want to chase stuff not catch it. Now I bang on the back door at night before I let her out so the bunnies have a chance. My husband is thrilled when it is a mole but usually the hole she digs is worse than what the moles do! Rexx will probably be fine so I would not worry.
My sister's dog caught a possum one night. Raised a racket, woke everyone up, freaked out my sister when she saw the dog torture the poor possum to death and leave the dead animal on the back steps. She was finally able to get the dogs in the house, and get her husband to come to remove the body. But, guess what? It was gone! It had been....playing possum.

Really. So unless the dog really eats the possum, don't be too sure it's been killed.
@ Julie I've had this happen at least 4-5 times over the years never has one remained "dead"!
a few yrs back, there was a horrible racker out by the trash cans, our corgis raced out their doggy door, and 2 seconds ran right back in!!a huge male raccoon was on top of the cans.smart dogs!!a few yrs later, same scenario, but our 2 boxers at the time, took on the raccoon!our male ali ended up at the vet the next early morning with holes in his head.glas we have corgis again and hopefully no more er vet visits!!
