OK, I did it. I took the 3 inadequate upright vacs out of the garage and to the salvation army.  I attached the instruction booklets and new filters for each and then.... I BOUGHT A DYSON.

I honestly don't know if this one will last but at least it has a guaranatee for 5 years!  I spent an entire day last week, online and on the phone, trying to find some one to fix, repair and tune upof  any  the collection of Hoovers.  Not only could I not find anyone, but the nearest place was in San Antonio (60 miles_ and they advised me not to try to get any one of the collection fixed.  The prices for reparis were $100-140 for a $200 machine!  so frustrating and perhaps a sign of our ecnomy that several small appliance repair businesses had disappeared locally.

We live in very dusty country, rural Texas so i know that I did sort of use up these machines but I really wanted to get them fixed not buy another one.  My best solution was to pass them along and hope another household can make use of them--which is what the local Salvation Army told me would happen. They have a repair shop and also said that vacs don't stay very long with them.

Anyway, no Corgi household could do without a vac.  And we have 3 Corgis and 2 cats...the ball dyson is taking a little bit of getting used to since it handles so differently but wow, the carpets are crazy clean.

At least until the dogs come back inside....

I just bought a Dyson last month also. I did not get the ball...I was afraid to get the ball so I just got the yellow one who a friend said she has with her dogs! I love it and yes...it's great they have a guarantee! It is very frustrating and so wasteful that nothing can be fixed anymore! Good point about the "until they come back inside!
My mom and I bought a DYSON a few years ago. We love it. It's amazing. Although, Kota decided he didn't like it so much a couple years ago and attacked it while my mom was vacuuming... He tore off a piece of plastic at the bottom on the side. It goes back on, but not as tightly as it could. My friend is going to take a look at it... It still works awesomely!!!! We got the light purple one.
Glad to hear some good reviews. i did a lot of online research on pet hair, too, and also searched this site for other discussions on dysons before I bought it. In the long run, I guess you either spend $$ every 2 years or all at once!
My dogs dont' seem to chase the vac but one of the cats does attack it.

I do try to use the furminator every other day--outside so that the corgi fur gets into all the local bird nests! THe wonderful house helper who comes to clean every 2 weeks is always amazed at the corgi fur. She has a large business and so sees a lot of houses with dogs and says the only ones who shed more are shelties.
We've killed 3 Hoovers and 1 Dirt devil in 7 years. Then we bought a Dyson, he's 6 years old now :) Make sure you do the maintenance, take apart the cyclone and wash it twice a year, the ball model have a smaller capacity, so empty often, avoid moisture, or else it will cake the cyclone.
Thanks for the info, Sam. One thing I really liked about this purchase was that the instruction booklet was so well drawn and informative--pictures only, too. I also like the fact that the filters are washable and Idon't have to spend $30 to replace them.

If the Dyson last that long, I think it deserves a name! I'm considering calling her Brenda. :)
My Dad is a handyman, so whenever something breaks he does his best to fix it. Unfortunately, in the past 6 or 7 years, we've seen a huge increase in the number of appliances we're going through. I think we're on our fourth or fifth coffee pot and third toaster. :[ "Planned obsolescence" is something I'm believing in more and more now. Our family's Hoover is one of those elephant vacs--or that's what I call it. It's got a big ol' block on wheels attached to a metal stick with the powerhead by a black tube. It's seen better days... but it does it's job. We recently got a Kenmore from my gramma who bought an Orec to replace it. It's amazing. I want it. I have a crappy $30 upright no-name vacuum for my apartment... I'm afraid the corgi/aussie/cat hair will do it in! haha. I'm sure one GOOD vacuum will fill the place in your heart for 3 not-so-good ones. :9
Yep love my Dyson it's 4 yrs old and never clogged....you do have to do some regular cleaning of the filter and chamber area but it's super easy and I do it every six months =)
We killed our Dyson but it did take about 8 years. I have a Bissell pet hair one now but I really did like the Dyson. With 3 dogs that shed and 2 shedding cats (one long hair) and 2 shedding men it gets a workout!
Perhaps we could start a "Corgis who live with a Dyson" group? ... I got the pink cannister Dyson in anticipation of having two Corgis (hopefully getting a Cardi this year, got Chinook, our PWC last August). The Dyson really is great for hard both floors and carpets.
I have dreams about getting a Dyson! Glad to know they do so well with this puppy fluff. Luckily we live with hardwoods and the dirt devil is good enough for area rugs...

Congrats on the new addition to your family ;)
I picked up an Oreck back in 1998 or so. I've only had to do one repair ($70) since then and a couple of belts. It's hands down the best vacuum I've ever used. My handheld had an issue with the cord this past December, so i ordered another set of Orecks (though there was nothing wrong with my XL). I figured with a bigger house, it couldn't hurt to have 2 (one for each floor). I LOVE my Orecks. And they take other brands on trade as credit towards the new (if you buy at a store). It gets the fluff without a problem and the bags are HEPA, so I don't sneeze! :-) I completely recommend them!!!
I did look long and hard at Orecks but I live in a small town/rural area and couldnt' find a dealer. I also looked at a water system called Rainbow that seemed to be great but really, really expensive. I have a friend who has 6 dogs and 6 cats (inside) and anothe 22 cats outside --all rescued, all neutered. She has a rainbow but the amount of pet hair there is probably at the level of a zoo.

Last year we got rid of 90% of the carpeting and put in ceramic tile, only keeping the carpet in teh bedrooms. I find that the tile is wonderful with the pets (you can see the waves of corgi hair ) but very unforgiving if you drop anything! Even corelle will shatter. Oh well... dogs come first.

And as the pundit says, At our house dog hair is a condiment.
