To neuter or not to neute

Cody is 6 yo. He is having problems with prostatitis. This seems to come on when females in our neighborhood go into heat. Sometimes it just goes away other times he gets painful and continues to worsen, then the vet puts him on steroids to get rid of the inflammation. She recommended neutering. Cody also is the sweetest dog but at these times he can get very taciturn. He will lash out at Lucy if she plays too much and at us if we accidently do something to him, like step or trip over him. After lashing out he will follow you around and not leave your side just looking pitiful because he knows he did wrong. Will neutering help or harm?

Hi Cathy, prostatitis is painful, Cody is not himself because it hurts. Get it done ASAP, it will help him.

I would have him neutered as well.

I would definitely follow your Vet's advice on this one. The neuter won't harm him (other than the bit of soreness from the surgery itself, which won't last long.)

Thanks everyone for your advise. Cody went under the knife yesterday. He was wide awake and ready to go when I picked him up. The vet said that she had to look again to make sure that she had done the surgery because he was so active and all the other dogs were sound asleep still from the anesthesia. So, he is doing good. A little slow and uncomfortable but ok.
