Bubba was running up the steps of the deck Friday a week ago and tripped. His back left foot missed the wooden step and I heard a thud to see him try agin only doing it once more. He never fell backwards but just continued on. Later that evening I noticed him limping and favoring that leg. I thought he'd be ok after a couple of days so just watched him closely.

By Tuesday, four days later, he wouldn't try jumping on the couch at all and would bunny hop down the hall instead of walking. It rained a little later on and afterwards we went outside for a potty break. I always dry his feet and chest off  and noticed when I tried picking up his right rear leg he didn't want to give it up. It was like it weighed 20 pounds. However, the left leg was no problem at all as he was putting very little weight on it.

I called the vet and took him in for diagnosis and was told he most likely had sprained some muscle/tendon at his knee. I don't know how she determined where a Corgi's knee is as you can't see that very well. At any rate, he was put on an anti-inflammatory drug whose name escapes me at the moment, being at work but, it starts with a "C". I was told if there's not a substantial change in him over the next several days, they may have to mildly sedate him and take x-rays...perhaps he'd have to undergo surgery.

He has done much better, only limping about five seconds yesterday after I got home and even jumped on the couch by himself. I've been picking him up, placing him on the couch with me and then lifting him off. Bottom line is this. Has anyone had an accident like this and was surgery necessary in the end?

Celecoxib may be? It's hard to know whats going on with out proper diagnosis and x-ray, generally hydrotherapy is the best non weight baring rehab method.
Wish I could recall the name, Sam. I'll check for sure when I get home. She felt all around under him and to the sides of his hips and told me the inflammatory drug would probably help but check back in case there was no progress. I'll look this evening for that name.
Wynn has done something like this and the vet said if it wasn't considerably better in 3 days on the prednisone they would have to do more. He was better after about the 1st 36 hours. I still try to watch him so he doesn't overdo things. This happened to him on a beautiful spring day and I didn't see him trip or anything he just wasn't using a rear leg!
Algy once took off after a squirrel and missed a few steps on our back deck. He came limping back and was not himself for a few days. We probably should have taken him in, as I think whatever he had done to his leg never really got better after that. He had some problems with his big, hoary toes/feet also, so it just added to the problem and in the grand scheme of things, he never enjoyed going for walks.

Barring some rest and the anti-inflammitories, I hope he is feeling better!!
I keep wondering what I can do with the steps. I can't put plywood across and up all the steps as the angle would be too great. Maybe I'll just have it carpeted like the stairs inside with a double layer of indoor/outdoor carpet. He may just need someething he can dig his feet into.
OK-The name of the drug is Carprofen(100mg). I called the vet today and told her the progress he appears to have made since Friday and asked should I continue given him the meds, come in for a reassessment or stop by for an x-ray. I was told to continue with the meds until they're gone. For sure if no further improvement transpires to bring him back.

Today when I got home he acted like nothing was ever wrong and I haven't seen him limp any(knock on wood). I'm hoping this will take care of the situation as I really don't want the little fellow to undergo surgery but will do whatever is necessary to help him...he's my best bud:) Not to mention the love of my life.
Glad things are looking up!
This is just sort of an update on things. After a few days on this Carprofen, which I later found out was the main ingredient in Rimadyl, he started improving and wasn't limping near as much. He still would occasionally pick that foot up about an inch on the floor and hop a few feet but then, let it back down.

Outside, he'd even have short bursts of running and even scratching up the grouno with both feet after he'd pee. I'm not sure what tothink at this point. I gave him all the meds at their request but he's still from time to time lifting that foot up a little. I don't want him to take much of that Carprofen as I haven't read a lot of good things about Rimadyl and may not have even given him that had I known what it was.

Has anyone had any problem in giving your Corgi Rimadyl-essentially, as I found out, Carprofen?
I've given it for a few days post-spay with no problems.
My male Corgi, Jack, does everything at 110% and so occasionally comes up hobbling on a leg, though usually it's a front leg. As a matter of fact the other day we got home from work and he was limping. It was worse the next morning, but by yesterday afternoon he was fine.

Like people, if it's just a little muscle pull or strain, or minor damage to a joing from overuse/misuse, it usually resolves on its own. If something was torn it may not heal. Like Sam says, it's hard to tell and many vets take the wait-and-see approach because of the need for sedation for x-rays in many pets.
They mentioned getting a "radiograph" if things didn't improve but, I'm hesitant to do that since after all the probing and proding he didn't whimper in pain through that so, I'm inclined to believe it's really not a torn ACL. I don't want him to have to be sedated just for an x-ray as that just doesn't seem necessary but I'm not familar with the process. I'd have to leave him most of the day for that and that doesn't make me happy.

If it was a torn, partially or completely, ACL I think he would have let the vet know when she started her probing and pushing on him weeks ago. He acted like nothing was going on at all and apparently, no pain from her pushing on his knee and moving the leg around in different directions. With those little short legs, it's a wonder they hold up all that weight as it is. As good as he eats and with his supplement each day(the Missing Link Plus) he should heal good, I would hope. How many Corgis get trout, grilled salmon, boiled eggs with his 1/3rd cup of kibble and a sweet potato weekly? :)
My Buffy had two torn ACL's but so many other issues we could not do surgery. Never did she so much as whine while being manipulated. Sparty on the other hand yelps "Bloody Murder" if they so much as touch him so you really can't tell by how much pain they exhibit. sparty has a partially torn ACL and was on Rimadyl for a while and then limited activity. That was about 6 or 7 years ago and so far ( knock on wood) he is fine. So keep an eye on him for a while and if there is no improvement you can make a decision based on your vet's advice etc. Hope he is better soon!
