I just opened a new 30 lb. bag of Taste Of The Wild Wetlands formula. What was inside does not resemble the kibble in our last two bags. I called TOTW and customer service said not to worry about the kibble being different size or color. The rep did say that it should not vary in smell.

Luckily, I still had a bowl of the last bag (Amy is such a lazy eater!). The pieces definitely look different. As to smell, I think the last bag smelled more like liver(?)and the new smells like regular dog food (like Purina).

Would you take it back? I hate to saddle the nice people at the feed store with a $50 return but I am nervous. Thoughts?

I've been known to throw out anything that I have to think twice about. I'm sure I've wasted some food before but I needed the peace of mind. I'm so bad that when I read that the Solid Gold formula that I was feeding Tipper had one ingredient shipped from China, I decided to return the bag for a refund because I only buy dog food made in the USA.

I buy Tipper's food at Petco and they have a generous return policy on food so they will often refund your money if you have a valid reason.

Can you call the vet to ask his or her opinion?

is it the same protein source as last time? I know that each protein source the kibble is slightly different. I'd probably return it and get a different bag, although the whole lot may be like that. Generally the food company will accept returns and so the feed store won't be out any money.

I think I'd try to return it if you're not sure about the quality.  Hopefully they will take it back.  You Should get what you pay for.  If they don't take it back and you are still unsure, I'm sure the local animal shelter would take it happily.

I feed Fromms and not TOTW, but I've had the kibble be different sizes before. Sometimes it's small pellets, sometimes medium sized disk shapes. Honestly I never really even gave it a second thought...I guess I assumed they just switched kibble sizes and I caught the end of the run, or the store had some stock in the back they just brought out.

I worked for Pro Pac pet foods and I can account for the difference in size and color.  While food companies try to keep consistency with their product, from time to time, things change.  A different grain company may have been used due to shortages.  Someone new may have been working the extruder.  Bad or different batches may get through inspection.  If your dog eats some and becomes ill, then I would call and complain again.  But most likely, it was just something off about that batch.

Good luck!

TOTW is grain-free...

I get the smaller bags so it doesn't get stale.

I've also switched to Orijen as TOTW uses canola oil. that's just my preference

A good rule of thumb is to always follow your own comfort level.  The store owner will not be out the money.  $50 is too much to pay to be worried!

Did you check the date?  Could it have sat out in the heat? I don't remember if it was TOTW or Canidea but I called one of them when  I had a question (I think it was the dogs didn't seem to like it as well as usual) and did find out that if the protein

level (or fat???) is off they  will spray it with a liquid to bring that level up and that's why sometimes it's shinier...hmmm. I guess I have never smelt the food. Sorry I know this isn't much help. The one food(I think it was Canidae I actually talked too a vet and they were very helpful.

Isn't it kind of disturbing that they spray the food with chemicals like that?  Just like it's disturbing that they process the heck out of many kid's cereals and then spray them with chemical forms of vitamins to replace what they processed out to begin with!

Sweetie if you are not sure of it just take it back or chuck it out. That is what I would do.

I called the feedstore guy and he said to bring it on back. I think I'll do it this one time and if it is still different I'll assume the company has simply made some changes. Thanks for all of the good feedback!
Definitely don't hesitate to take something like that back.  That way the pet store can send it back/give feedback to the manufacturer and they can try to track down whether it was just a poor quality batch or if there is actually something wrong with the food.  Hopefully the new bag will look right.  :)
