Very interesting, Sam. I've contended for a long time that the photographer matters more than the camera. I worked one time with a top pro photographer from Germany who sometimes shot with a point n shoot Canon and when I asked him "Why?" he replied "Sometimes it is all you need."

Hello Corgi Photographers, here's a partial list of cameras used in this year's Calendar entries :)

Great ideas, Thanks! I need to read up on my editing options on my camera, I know it can do it, now I just have to see if "I" can do it! Thanks again!

Kristie, seeing the whole picture though the viewfinder is one of the hardest things to learn. I've been shooting actively for about 25 years now and still mess it up. Seems like there is always something goofed up, an ear clipped off, subject too off center, or some sort of junk in the background.

A camera with lots of quality megapixels can allow you to crop and level the subject and often eliminate the problem. Getting up to speed with some decent photo editing software like PhotoShop Elements or Paint Shop Pro can let you go a step further in fixing the goofs or editing out distractions.

Here's an example from my photo Sam T. was kind enough to select as Corgi Pic of the Day: Gromit and his "step-sister" Holly the wiener dog on the pier at Avila Bay, CA.

The original photo:

Note the extraneous pace on each side of them and especially the ocean buoy between Gromit's ears. Distracting and looks like some sort of errant party had.

Here's the edited image Sam selected:

Step 1: crop off the unneeded sides, Step 2: Use the "clone tool" to erase the buoy (very easy!). There were a few other changes to improve the image but those two are the basic ones that got it pretty well fixed up. For what it's worth, I edit with Nikon Capture NX2 since I shoot a Nikon camera. I also use PaintShop Pro X2 for minor editing.

Ears...check...focus...check...dang it didn't center him. Too caught up in the moment to check it all.

It's because corgi ears are so massive x_x

Seems I have trouble getting her head and ears in the same picture. Something I need to work on.

Jen, if you're having fun taking pictures and you're pleased with the photos, that's all that really matters. You've got a handsome fellow there in Ace as a photo subject so you can't go wrong. In time you might want a fancier camera but you'll never get a better photo subject than Ace!
