excited to share photos, swap stories and for people to share feed back of my random photos of my kids.  Although I do photography as a business; majority of my photos are of Corgis.  It never hurts to always continue learning; just makes you a better person and open to more professionalism.

Thank you Gromit and Doug! I appreciate the time you take to explain. I will "bone" up and submit more pictures, all properly sized!

Snickmom,

The picture you upload is 2448 x 2383 pixels per inch and the DPI is a whopping 612 dpi.  That's BIG image display-wise although the file is only 282k which isn't that big.  So...

There are different ways to make an image smaller and they can be combined as needed.

  • You can reduce the measurement dimensions, as you did in PS.
  • You can reduce the pixel dimension of the image.
  • You can reduce the DPI
  • Reduced the number of colors in the image
  • Increase the .jpg file compression when saving the image.

Each of those will affect image quality to some degree but you might not even notice it for web display. .jpg compression increase will have the most dramatic affect on file size and image quality.

I don't use PhotoShop so I can't say how it implements each of those methods, every program is a little different.

Usually for web display the image is made dimensionally smaller to a certain pixel dimension rather than inch measurement dimension.  A 4"x4" image can still be a huge file.

Try reducing your photos to 600 x NNN pixels for web display, especially here on MyCorgi.  Even on photo sites like Flickr, 800x600 or 1024x768 pixels is plenty.

Reduce the image DPI to 72 dpi which is normal monitor resolution.

In some programs you can also reduce the number of colors in an image from a few hundred thousand to 64,000 colors and it will have little impact on the quality for web display purposes.  I rarely do this.

Lastly, .jpg compression can be varied in some programs but the higher the compression (smaller file) the more it negatively impacts image quality.

I used those methods on your nice picture and the file size dropped to 168k which is more than acceptable for decent photo display.  Knock the pixel dimension down to 500xNNN and the file will get a lot smaller yet.  Most pictures here on MyCorgi only need to display at about 400 - 500 pixels or less unless you want them to click to a larger size.

Note: Adjusting the pixel width in the MyCorgi upload only changes the display size, not the file image dimension itself.

Some balance of pixel size, dpi, and jpg compression will yield a nice looking file that doesn't take up much on-line space.  You'll need to experiment to see what works best for you and displays your pictures the way you feel looks best.

Hope that helps and isn't too confusing!

Here's your photo at 450 x 438 pixels and 72 dpi.  File size is 120k

PS Snickmom, please keep taking photos! Even if you don't think your photos are perfect, they will capture moments of your Corgi just perfectly! Snap away and save all the memories. You'll be happy you did!

Hi Snickmom. Sorry I never learned your first name. In the Corgi Photographer site, there are many forums to answer all your questions. I'm sorry that I don't read them, and I should! I need help, but, I'm far too lazy. I think if you have the motivation to take great photos PLUS, and this is BIG, take the time to read the manual that comes with your camera of choice, YOU WILL BE GREAT.

Hi: I would like to learn more about taking great pictures, I have learned a lot by looking at corgi pictures that I like. Snickers is a good sport about posing. I have been using a Nikon Coolpix 5200, but I have talked my husband into getting me a Coolpix S8100 for Christmas, I am so excited! I promise to read all the instructions.

I need help getting my picture small. I used Photoshop to make it 4"x4" then saved it at the low quality setting and it was still 260KB. I tried different things and couldn't get it smaller. I did use the dialog box to make the pixel width smaller when I loaded this one.
