Agonizing over what to name my corgi. I've been thinking about this for years and I am no closer to a name now than I was 4 years ago!!

It has to begin with the letter P. Why? I have no idea. It just feels right. So far I have been toying with:

  • Pono - Hawaiian word for 'the right thing to do' or goodness, lots of personal meaning to it.
  • Peanut - the word that comes to mind when I see the little puppies
  • Paczki - (punch-key) a delicious Polish doughnut, and the pups were born around Paczki Day
  • Poke-poke or Poke - a word and action of endearment to me

How do you find the right name?!

"Puppy"? Excuse me for suggesting this possibility.

Likely a male, *possibly* a BHT, and you have this fixtation with the letter P.
If I had a BHT, I'd name it Procyon [PRO see un]. "Pro" for short. Find Orion in the southern Spring night sky; locate Sirius the Dog Star in Canis Major, Orion's Big Dog (brightest star in the sky, to Orion's lower-left, confusable only with Jupiter or Venus). Procyon is the the major star to the upper-left of Sirius, it's in Canis Minor, Orion's Little Dog.
A corgi is a little dog. The BHT connection? "Procyon" happens to be the genus name of raccoons -- the mask -- a masked little dog.
Our first corgi was named Sirius.

I looked through the list of Welsh baby boy names that Don linked to.  Saw "Maddog" on the list of names. Probably a non-starter for a Corgi name but what a great name for a guy!

Ah, if only he was born on 3/14, could've named him Pi!

But like from what others said, it'll just hit you, bam! I do like the names you've chosen so far--Pono is very pretty and Paczki sounds awesome.

Luke was almost named Parker.

But I had a list of favorite names and we ended up not using any of them once we met him, haha.

WHAT EVER YOU DO DON'T TALK TO OUTSIDE FAMILY MEMBERS ABOUT THE NAME!

I tend to pick geeky names, because my husband and I are geeks... the rest of my family, are not. So whenever they would ask us what we were thinking about naming the puppy they made sour faces at all our choices.

(I think they were surprised with Roslyn, but we rescued her with that name, and little do they know of Battlestar Galactica!Muhahahaha)

Just keep making lists. One day you will get so stuck on a name, you won't be able to refer to the puppy without thinking of that name.

good luck!

When my husband and I first met, we talked about one day getting a dog. Since we were in the getting to know each other stage, we talked about our childhoods. I had mentioned that my dad had worked on a dairy farm growing up and we visited that farm once he had us kids. At that time, they had a pigmy goat named Noodles. David, my husband, thought that was a perfect name for a corgi (he had always wanted a corgi). Now that we had decided on what type of dog, I thought the perfect name would be Wilson. When we went to see if Noodles was the right corgi for us, I took one step out back, looked at him, then turned to my husband and said...He is a Noodles, not a Wilson. That is how Noodles got his name and people love it! Kids enjoy his name because they all think he is named after spaghetti noodles. I do find it quite odd that the names for pets my husband comes up with all revolve around food. I got 2 hamsters shortly after we met and since he took me to go and pick them out, I allowed him to name one. He named his Nacho and I named mine Bob. See, he is all about food (and Noodles is just like his daddy, all about food as well).

what about "Piper"?

OH...this can be difficult but I do agree with Bev about waiting till you get the pup home. Maybe have a list of your fave 4 or so and then decide which name fits the pup:). I used the Welsh names list for 2 of mine but with Livvy her name was going to Gwenneth and I even had name tags done and ready to be put on, well...she was not a Gwenneth so her middle name is that and we gave he a new name. I have Bella named after another Bella who I loved so much and she has a daughter named Bella the 3rd. sage is named after spices but she is one of my own and I named the littler after spices but she kept her baby name. Good luck!

I always decide after getting the pup. Have a few names in mind and then decide once you have spent some time with her/him. My husband and I take turns which explains the sport related names of my corgis. I knew someone that had a dog named Petunia.
