Hello All,
The chance I've wanted is finally happening, I get to have my niece at my house for a couple of days overnight. She is 19 months old and just a bundle of energy and noisy!!! The reason I am writing this here, is because I am looking for advice on how to handle having a toddler at my house with a corgi who isn't used to having little ones around. I have an idea of how I am going to handle this but was wondering if maybe any of you had any better ideas, I have not thought of.
I am thinking of gating him off in a section of the kitchen while she is here, just letting him get used to the idea of her running around and making lots of noise. If I go to pick her up, I am pretty sure he is going think he needs to protect her. I know I have to make sure he knows who is in charge, but not having a toddler around on a full time basis makes it hard to teach your dog around little ones.
I want to make the stay enjoyable for all.

Oh how fun:) I think gating him off is a good idea for both of them. We have several grandchildren and about that age I am also afraid of them falling on the dog (accidently). Maybe she can throw the ball once in awhile if Tucker likes that and play with him when you are right there...or he may chose to ignore her? My Wiley (rescue) is not mean to kids but gets nervous around them unless she's loose outside. She was never socialized to them:( Also make sure you take a bit of time for Tucker so he doesn't feel left out!
Have a great time!!!!!
Maybe I will even have my niece throw the ball for Lance over the gate for him to fetch, that could be a fun activity. I also think I may try having Lance on a leash in the house around my niece. Some how I will have to figure out how to walk them while she is here for the 4 days. I won't be able to while its just me and my niece since she won't go for stroller rides anymore.
Thanks Jane, I am sure we will have a great time, and hopefully figure out this all before my niece goes home, lol. Probably will have it down pat, by the time she is ready to go home.
Our only problem with the 3 1/2 year old grandson is when he runs (which is everywhere) the boys chase him. Herding I presume. Chepstow chases and barks and Tenby nips some.
Grandson (Conner) is arriving tomorrow with mom for a 4 day visit, thank god for beer!
Yeah, my niece will be on the go non-stop from the time she gets here til the time she leaves, she is very active. Mom and Dad will not be here to give me a break though, lol. Mom is going out of town on a business trip and Dad is workiing long unpredictable hours with his new job. I will need to rest up this weekend to keep up with her!!!
okay, I had to laugh when you said when she winds down for nap time :) ...I hope she does unwind for a nap, when she goes to daycare I hear shes not big on napping. :( Maybe her Aunt can convince her napping is fun. :)
I think my biggest concern is startling Lance with her crying or unexpected noises. This definitely will be nice to have my niece here and expose Lance and hopefully get him used to her while she is here for her visit. When he was almost two, we were visiting my in laws and my nephew who was a toddler at the time ran around and lance very nicely ran around with him, in fact my nephew would stop running and lance would stop and wait for him to start running again, so cute!! He never even got close enough to really herd him, although I think Lance would definately herd my niece now, lol. It will be interesting.
