Amicus
Hey guys,
My puppy (11 weeks) is on Orijen, but out of concern for the high levels of protein, I thought it required some investigation. Initially, I was just thinking of mixing her food with some other kibble. But, I went to a local pet store today, where employee (may have been the owner) is an actual pet nutritionist and we discussed switching her to Amicus. I grabbed a trial size, and she seems to love it. I was just curious if anyone else uses this brand, or has had experience with it!

I have never heard of Amicus but did a quick search and two things come to mind about the food. #1 from what I saw, it is only formulated for small breed dogs. Corgis should be eating a food that is formulated for a large breed dog because they are in fact more similar in growth and body type to a large breed than a small breed.This dog food was formulated more for dogs like yorkies and chihuahuas who's dietary needs are different than a large breed dog or a corgi.
I also have to question the pet nutritionist thing. There are many self proclaimed "pet nutritionists" out there so just because somebody says its so, doesn't necessarily mean they are and certainly doesn't mean they know what they are talking about. The food itself looks like a good food but just wanted to put a warning out there to do your research (like you are doing now) before buying a large bag or taking anybody's word for it. Unless they are somebody who actually went to college and studied companion animal nutrition, I'd take their advice with a grain of salt. You can speak to "pet nutritionists" at Petco or Petsmart who essentially took a 2-4 week course and now call themselves nutritionists, and you can read pages and pages of information from pet nutritionists online and when you actually go to look at their credentials most have no experience or formal education beyond reading a book or doing some online research themselves.

It's hard to keep a straight face while calling yourself a "pet nutritionist" for an animal that snacks out of the catbox and everywhere else.
Heck, *I* am a "corgi nutritionist".
"...Don't even bother to ask the question. The answer is, 'yes'. That'll be $0.014...."
Even at $50/hr., it's hard to make any money when every consultation lasts only a second.

I haven't heard of it either, but I personally would not suggest a food made for small and mini breeds. IMO corgi puppies should be fed a large breed puppy formula or an all life stages food.

I agree with Jane and because they are a large breed dog you are right to feed a lower protein food till they get older. I feed 24-25% to pups and my adults eat 29- 32% protein. Same food (TOTW) just different protein source). there's many good discussions on MyCorgi about foods.

Thank you guys for all the replies! You've touched on all my concerns that I was having.
And Melissa, THANK YOU for providing the insight on the actual term nutritionist. It's astounding to me, now having a dog, what I've learned about the people who we ask for help concerning out pets. And I don't think that it helps that people seemed to be misinformed and naive when it comes to Corgis.
With that said, after reading the forums, I'm going on a hunt to find a TOTW sample tomorrow. :)

I feed Frank TOTW for 2 reasons, 1 its a highly rated food and my vet agrees that it is a great food, and 2 its cheap! lol. A 30 lb bag is generally cheaper than a 27 pd bag of science diet! He also couldn't handle some of the other brands like Wilderness, Wellness, or Solid Gold.

Nicole, everyone on here has given you great advice. I'd been feeding my three on TOTW and they've done well. It's a highly rated food. I did try some of the bit higher rated ones (Merrick Turducken this last time) and they love it but it gives Nimh terrible gas...bleah! So back to TOTW. We all want to do as best we can for our critters. It gets mighty confusing, too, reading all the stuff out there.

I havn't heard of TOTW, is it a brand name. And where can you purchase it.

I believe you can go online to TOTW and they may have a store locater for near you We live in the boonies. My vet orders mine because it's easier and many have started using it. I also have done the research and cost which is only 10 cents more than the Canidae that I feed my rescues.

I feed my pups/youngsters...salmon and my older ones I switched to bison which they really like. there's also other flavors but these are their 2 favorites...
