ok so as u all know i am preparing my house to bring home our pup. for the first time i a buying an x pen and i have never owned one but now that i have a job i dont want to leave him in his crate for the hrs i am gone. so i want to put him in the x pen with dollar so she can keep him company or i might just put im in there by himself but one thing is certain. he will have accidents and i know this but i was thinking of putting puppy pads down so it will help with the accidents or i will buy the potty patch at petsmart. im leaning more towards the potty patch as its more like grass but will it defeat the purpose of potty training? at night he will be in his crate.

also i have seen multiple discussions on dog food. i feed my pets wellness and if he dosnt agree with it then thats ok but should i get the regular puppy food or the large breed puppy food?? i see that most lean towards getting the large breed puppy food but why is the reason for this?? i feed teddy the normal wellness puppy food and he did great on it.

* i know a lot of u dont agree with feeding corgi puppies puppy food but i want to for my pup for the DHA thats in it

thanks!

and thanks to those who answered my question on weather he will be a red headed tri, its very exciting!

Beth, I think you just saved the world!! Awesome!! You could charge for this advice!!

I should add that sometimes I would come home to shredded papers, or a water bowl that had been pawed empty.  Jack LOVED to paw in his water bowl then lay down in the damp spot when it was hot.  I had to get him one of those giant gerbil bottles to make sure he had access to water.

Large breed puppy food. Here's my puppy pen set up, I used a black plastic tray that I got at a pet store about 24X 30, I used newspapers. Sage loved it even when she was the only one left...kept her out of trouble while we were gone also as she was a cord chewer. As you can see outside works too.

Jane  I like these two pictures, have not seen them before.  Very nice

thank you for the pics. i like them as they give me a good visual on how to set it up. by the way your puppies are way to cute!

Also if you get a pen...get one tall enough...I use a 30" but also have a 36". One of Bella's pups would get out of the 36":(

I have to agree that pads wouldn't be the best for this situation.  You'd be telling him that it was ok to pee/poop indoors and that's definitely not what you want.  ;)

The only time I used Wellness was when I first started looking for a new food for Yuki, so I'm not much help there.

thats ok :) and u do have a point the pee pads would probably confuse him

My little guy loves tipping up the water so look for a rubber backed water dish- I covered 1 whole small room with plastic & newspaper... I think that grass stuff would stink after a while...  I just pick it up whats in there morning & night...

I have a chew toy you can freeze thats good for when he teeth's & until the pup is a good size 10 pounds or so I kept my cats looked in their room at night he had freedon to walk from him pen to the room & I did not want the cat to be on the same path...

Also the pup will jump & jump all over dollar I gave Daisy almost 8 a place she could get away from him as much as she needed in our room...

Now he is about 15 weeks now & just starting to relax with her rather then have to play every second:))) Also I add canned pumkin/ grated apple & carrot & protein the odd dose of fish oil to their meals & a spoon of kefir or plain yogurt every now & again:))) or a sprinkle of cheese:))) have fun Dollar will help you so much with the puppy he will just follow & do what ever she does... Have fun:)))

thank you Carry :)) i am hoping that he will learn from dollar and do what ever she does with a crowd of people and other dogs.  this is going to be so much fun! i cant wait to bring him home :))

Hi Rebecca!  Fun times are ahead with the little guy...will he be in the X pen with Dollar?  I think the puppy patch might be a good idea, but believe me I am no expert!  I used to leave any pups gated onto the laundry/powderroom breezeway which is tiled and didn't use anything and once the pups were old enough never had a problem with the holding their business til I got home.  Just remember he won't be ready to completely train til he is physically old enough...just like kids!  Here is my latest experience:

I rescued 2 corgis this spring...they both had been raised in an outdoor kennel (boo!  Corgis are NOT kennel dogs!) but had been inside the home on occasion.  The guy would put a puppy pad down and I guess Katie would use it "sometimes"....so I get them, Katie had been attacked by something (I suspect either a bigger dog or a coyote) so she was very shy and was still recovering from the horrid injuries and infection and maggots...Jack, her son, was healthy, and shy too.  It took me a couple months for them to get used to going outside ON THE GRASS since they had either done it in a gravel/cement kennel or in the house on a pad....Kate still doesn't like to go out in the grass if it is too long (I think it tickles and she doesn't like it) plus if its raining out, real windy or storming (they are afraid of storms from living outside in them:(...Katie is 4, Jack is 2.....

In any case after about 2 months they figured out where they need to go, to sit at the door and not to do anything inside.  Corgis are esp smart and want to please, I think the most important thing is to be consistant with potty times and not to scold them too much, just let them know they need to go OUT to do it (this of course is after pup is old enough).  I never had one accident with my first corgi Angel Emma, got her at 10 weeks, was consistant and she was too proud to go in the house anyways!!

Good luck, I am so excited for you both and of course Dollar!  Teddy is looking down from the Bridge smiling with that cute Corgi smile:)

aww thank you Nancy =) and thats so wonderful of u to take in two rescues! im glad they are doing great in your home now.

i might leave dollar in there with him but then again i am not entirely sure yet as i dont want her to be super annoyed or anything. i might just put them together at night so he wont feel alone
