I just saw it too and now am no longer gonna give my babies the milo's kitchen chicken treats anymore just to be safe - no chicken jerky for them

Stories like this are why I stopped feeding store-made treats to my dogs.  The only one I feed is a dried salmon treat, and even then it's only once per week at most.  Other than that they get veggies and fruit.

There are jerky treats made in the US from US ingredients.  I believe it is the treats from China (Milo's Kitchen included) that have been linked to the illnesses and deaths.  I now check the sources of treats very carefully before giving anything to any of my critters.  Dogswell is another brand, Waggin' Train, bunches of others.

Wow.  That's scary.  Thanks for posting it for the rest of us who haven't seen it yet!   I have been making my shepherd homemade dog treats since he has such bad allergies.  It's a simple recipe and I feel good knowing what actually goes into it.

A few weeks ago I had mentioned this in a response to a discussion about a pwc vomiting, the annoying part is that this has been looked into for quite some time but the american importers do not want to recall these "treats".Australia's importer of these Chinese jerky treats voluntarily pulled them from stores, even though they were one of their biggest sellers, guess they care about their customers more than their bottom line,go aus! This is why I have always stressed to people to get clear answers about the source of ingredients in any product fed to pets, this applies to the high end foods as well.I believe the site I got that from originally was ,thepetadvocate,

why are jerky treats making pets sick?

"Most of the jerky treats implicated have been made in China. Manufacturers of pet foods are not required by U.S. law to state the country of origin for each ingredient in their products."

So if we can't be sure our dog treats were not made at least partly in China, why not simply cut small slices of human-grade jerky (if you can find some that's not made in China)?

I tried to trust the dried treats made in the US, but I couldn't even get myself to purchase the sweet potato jerky, which was also implicated in some cases. So far the only chew treat that is deemed safe seems to be the bully sticks, go figure!? That is the only chew treat I allow in my house, but I am hoping to find a safe recipe for homemade jerky soon.

Even human grade jerky can be very high in salt and other undesirable substances (i.e.  MSG, nitrates and BHT, a preservative)...better if you can make your own, just cut meat into strips and dry slowly in oven or dehydrator. But this is pretty time consuming. I made a batch of homemade sweet potato jerky in my oven once...would have been better to have a dehydrator...takes a long time. (Ties up the oven so you can't cook anything else in there!)

I often use kibble for treats.

Me too...for the DOG, I mean!

This kind of stuff is so scary! It makes me really nervous about treats, especially when friends want to give gifts to Winston. I usually only get the treats that are made by MudBay and Winston seems to be doing perfectly fine on those. But these things make me worried and angry. I can't believe we can't make/enforce better controls and regulations on foods for animals.

Costco sell one similar to this, imported from China.

Never agreed to get them unless I make them myself, which I don't know how.....   :)
