Has anybody used Himalayan dog chews? My friend gives them to her dog and says they last for weeks. Just wondering if anybody has tried them and if their dog likes them? How long do they last a corgi? I'm thinking of getting the 20-40 pound ones that are 6 inch long and 1 inch around:

I usually give Franklin retriever rolls and they used last him a week or more, but lately he has been on a major chewing kick and will chew an entire rawhide in one day if I don't take it away from him. I'd rather give him something that will last longer. The rawhides are cheap but I was just wanting to try something different that may do a little more to clean teeth since he doesn't get knuckle bones anymore.

I'd be interested in hearing how people like them also.

This is that cheese stuff, right?  My breeder bought some for her dogs but said they lasted just a few hours for each of her Corgis.

When I first read this I thought you meant 20-40 pound Himalayan dog chews!    Sounded awfully big ;->

I've been giving our dog these for several months now...   I really like them for a few reasons - the main one being that he likes to chew on them but they last a lot longer than rawhide, bully sticks, or bones., at least for him.  He can go through rawhide easily in less than a day, and bully sticks he seems to go through in about 15-20 minutes, so I don't give those very often (way too expensive)   The bigger Himalayan chews usually last him a couple weeks.

He also isn't quite as obsessive or possessive with it as he is with rawhide or bones, which in his case is a good thing because he can be food possessive.    He doesn't chew on it constantly for hours (or at least not anymore), but he does chew on it some every day...so it's perfect for leaving around.    The other bonus is that they aren't awful smelling (or messy).

When they get really small pice you can stick it in the microwave and it will expand and get more of a honeycomb like texture... in that state he can crunch them up in a few minutes, so I've only done that when it was down to a nub (a friend was at a dog expo and the company was one of the vendors and told her about the microwave trick).

At any rate, if you are looking for alternatives  I'd say they're definitely worth a try...

What is it made of????

Rachael- yes they are the hard cheese ones

Jane- they are made of either a very hard cheese made from yak milk or the ones I posted are yak and cow milk with some salt and lime juice.

Diane- I think I am going to try them. Franklin goes through chewing phases and he has already chewed/eaten 3 10" retriever rolls in the last few days. Its funny because he will go months without touching the rawhide then one day he decides he wants to chew it and is chewing them every waking moment. We'll see how he likes these new chews. He can be a bit picky.

I can't say Chewey is very picky (pretty much the opposite, at least when it comes to anything resembling food), so I'll be curious to hear how Franklin likes them...

How long do you puth the in the microwave?

I'm curious about them but reluctant to try them.  The last antlers we got were gone in about 2 days; pretty bad return on the dollar.   Most people said they lasted weeks.   So I'll be curious to hear more.

I used to buy the XL ones, but with the two dogs they don't last long. If I give them each one they will be gone in less than a day.

Beth - what kind of antlers did you buy?! The ones I have are so big and heavy I have stubbed my toe on them...I don't think it would be possible for them to be gone in a day even with a whole pack of dogs chewing on them. I have some that are over a year old and still going.

Mine were maybe 6 or 7 inches long; about the size and shape of the sterilized marrow bones you find in the pet stores.   Where do you get the big ones?  I paid like $8 or $10 dollars each for the short ones I got.

Hmm that's crazy, you must have some serious chewers! Were they specifically sold for dogs? I've seen some in the pet stores that seemed softer to me, but maybe they treat them with something? The ones I have are as hard as a rock lol.

These are the ones I usually buy: http://www.etsy.com/listing/61020608/large-half-antler-dog-chew-siz...

I think she sells the whole ones too which probably last longer, but my guys prefer the ones that are cut in half.

This is the gigantic one I have - I bought it in January of 2011 and it's still going strong.

I didn't see any like it in her store right now but you could send her a message, or just do a search for "dog antler", it brings up a bunch of shops.

Yes, I do have serious chewers.  The first ones lasted longer, but then they both figured out that if they concentrate their chewing on one edge they can dissolve it fairly quickly over time.  It's not that they break off hunks, it's that they whittle it down.  If I get them again I will take them from the dogs after a half hour or so, but since having them reserved as "special treats" sort of runs counter to the entire reason for having chews that the dogs enjoy (to work on when they are bored and I don't have time to play/work with them)... well, it's made me reluctant to buy more.
