Corgi not a big fan of food - should I be worried?

Hi all,

I have a 2.5 year old male corgi named Milo and I'm kind of at my wit's end with him in regard to eating. From the beginning, he's been a very reluctant eater and it hasn't mattered what we feed him. We've tried all the high-end dog foods both wet and dry and he'll usually be OK with them for a couple of days but then I guess he gets bored and he refuses then to eat them anymore.

I don't think he's sick because he's full of pep, playful, ready to go for a walk or a run or to play ball for an hour, but seems totally disinterested in food. (Unless of course, it's my food. Then he's three inches away, waiting for a hand out.) Let me state here clearly that we do not feed him off our plates. In the past we've given him some plain roast chicken or cheese mixed with his dry food n occasion to entice him, but he doesn't eat people food on a regular basis and has not succeeded in making begging work for him.

Anyway, he's not so thin you can see his ribs or anything, but he's definitely far closer to supermodel stature than he should be, being a corgi. Should I be worried? Or should I just leave him alone and let him eat when/if he's hungry enough to do so?

Thanks!

Is he getting enough excersize? And do you feed him at scheduled times? If you do, try just leaving a bowl of food out and let him pick at it as he picks at it maybe? ( If you can).
This is about as much help as I can be :( Sorry.
Best of luck!

He gets tons of exercise. My husband walks him in the morning, I take him out for an hour midday and again for an evening walk. From what I understand, that's a pretty good amount of exercise?? We do feed him at scheduled times (we were instructed to do so by a trainer) but maybe we should leave the food out and just let him eat it when/if he decides to.  I love food. I can't believe someone wouldn't want to eat! =D

My Henry is a ridiculously picky eater. I've tried every trick in the book and he hasn't changed one bit. It's infuriating at times lol. I'd just keep doing what you're doing as long as he's in good health. Stick to your schedule, and pick up the food if he doesn't eat it within a certain amount of time. I personally wouldn't free feed him as I think that may only make it worse, plus if you ever need to board him, or need to monitor his food, or medicate him with a meal, etc it may be troublesome.

my emi AND helix are super picky eaters! i tried this method for a while, where i pick up the food if they chose not to eat, and in the end they starved themselves until they would puke white foam. it was quite alarming, but everyone always says that a healthy corgi would not starve themselves, but for me thats not the case! its so frustrating T________T

I understand. My Chuckie doesn't eat his kibble too and if I try feeding him the same thing on his 2nd meal, he refuses to even eat it, even if the first time I fed him he seemed to REALLY enjoy it.

I've only had him since the end of May and I've already tried 5 brands of dog food (Nutro Max for puppy; the breeder's fed the puppies this brand, Beneful, Merrick Puppy Plate, Super Wellness 5, and Avoderm) and we're on the 6th brand. I'm thinking of settling on Blue Buffalo, his current one,  because he seems more eager to eat it than the other dog kibbles.

I've read where people leave the dog food on the ground for a certain amount of time only and then pick it up if the dog doesn't eat it.  That doesn't work for me too.  So, I've just left the food in the bowl and gradually throughout the day he'll come by and take a couple of mouthfuls and usually during night time he'll finish eating all the food in his dog bowl.

I figured, he eats when he wants to, not when I want him to.  It doesn't bother me.  The most important thing for me is that he eats at all.  I don't have kids so, I don't worry about them eating the dog food if I leave it in the dog bowl.  One of my 1 year old neice does that.  She's even gotten to the point where she'll throw her food onto the ground, get on her hands and knees, and eat from the ground like a dog.  She's mimicking their dog. It was funny when I saw it and it doesn't bother my sister.  My sister is just grateful that she eats at all because previously she wouldn't eat food and got really constipated and it was a horrible time for them.

I've pinpointed how to get him to eat though.  He's very dog motivated and if there's a dog visiting at our place he'll be all over his kibble AND the other dog's kibble.  When we go visit and they have a dog, he'll eat THEIR dog's food PLUS his own food.  I have no problem getting him to eat then!  It's too bad I can't afford another dog right now.

I think you should do what works for your dog, not what works for other people's dogs.  Everybody is not the same.  The same thing goes for dogs, every dog is not the same and what works for one might not work for another.

I have 2 finicky eaters also. I can't leave food down because others would gladly eat it BUT these 2 like it with a bit (1/3 cup)  of warm water it's almost like they need this or it's too dry for them. I do put their food in the crate and  they can eat in peace and quite. I have left food down when we had less dogs and it worked just fine.

Sidney is a very picky eater too. We went through several brands and finally found one he eats well (Natural Balance Alpha Dog).
