http://www.blackhillsgsd.com/ thats her web site. no reviews but she said she could give me references.

Pembrokes should not have blue eyes! Just an FYI

how does a blue eye occure?

She does sound like a good breeder.  When I got Lucy, her breeder sent weekly emails with personality updates and photographs.  It made the experience fun and special :)

I agree with Jane, the breeder should have a clause in their contract that if for some reason you cannot keep a pup, the breeder gets the dog back (no matter the age).  I have this with Lucy.  Additionally, if for some reason the breeder is unable to take Lucy, then I would surrender her to the Cardigan Welsh Corgi Rescue Trust.  This is a safeguard for the dog to make sure she NEVER ends up in a shelter.

Also, does she have a spay/neuter clause in her contract for puppies sold as pets?

She did say her pets are not for breeding. Not sure if it's in a contract though. And her taking the pups back is something ill need to ask. All her pups are pets only, she doesn't breed show dogs.

At the risk of sounding hopelessly naive... How do you get your pooch certified (if certification is needed) as a therapy dog? Cassie just DOTES on children and would be wonderful as a a friend and visitor to the unhappy and the ailing. It's occurred to me that this would be a good thing, but I don't ,know where to start.

There is no proper certification from what I have read. There needs to be spacific training though. You should just google it. I have spent hours trying to find information on psychiatric service dog and emotional support dogs and I got what I needed on emotional support dog but information on the service dog just left me with more questions.

A good step is starting off with the Canine Good Citizen Award.  If there are certain places you are interested in volunteering at with your dog, I'd call them and see what training/certs they require.

Vicky,

I really didn't know either. We are lucky enough to have an AKC Club within an hour of where we live. I have taken most of my dogs to classes there. With Sage we took a 2nd or 3rd class and many in the class were going on to do their CGC(Canine Good Citizen). We then signed up with Therapy Dog Inc. we then tested out 3 x's and Sage became a Therapy dog...you can check them out online:)

It's so much fun. Sage loves the elderly and so mainly visit nursing homes and assisted living places. The group is so much fun!

This is the group our AKC Club suggested.

Welcome Therapy Dogs Inc. is a national organization with its corporate office located in Cheyenne, WY. TDInc. was incorporated in the year 1990.

I would suggest the puppy kong that looks like a pacifier and a small rope toy to have for when you get a pup...these are very easy for them to play with at 1st. More is always fine but these are on my must have list:)

For teething my dogs really like the Orka Petstages toys, especially the ones with the blue rubbery areas for chewing, playing etc. the company makes some wonderful toys for all stages and very much for puppies.
http://www.dogtoys.com/orka-jack-dog-toy-large.html I wouldn't get the large one but they do make a smaller one with a rope that's really fun for the dog to chase around. I've had Buddhas for years! I wouldn't leave it in the crate unattended though.

Solid crate for crate training and then I moved my dogs into a wire crate once they outgrew the plastic crate and understood that it meant quiet time, no howling, no accidents in the kennel. Then, and only then, will I use a wire crate on a young dog.
