When do corgis typically come into heat? When to spay?
Just dawned on me that when I go in for the lovely cancer surgery on Aug 7, Ruby will JUST about to turn 7 months old.
Seems to me that my German shepherd, whom the breeder and I had planned as potentially a breeding dog, herself (she WAS incredible...), came into heat at about 10 months, after which I learned that she had mild dysplasia and so had her spayed. I don't especially want Ruby to come into heat at all and so would like to forestall that, but would like her to be physically as developed as she should be before yanking out an organ that produces hormones that may be important in her growth.
Right now I have an appointment to get her spayed on July 15. She'll be 6 months old on July 10. Is that too early to get this done?

Oh dear! It sounds like she's definitely not going to take this lying down!!
I hope she'll soon be back together again, and that you don't have to inflict a Collar of Shame on her.

Horrors! Poor little dawg!
My vet said Ruby should be OK in a few days. I sure hope she recuperates faster than three weeks. I'll be in the hospital myself by then. :-/

I think 6 months is pretty normal for females. I believe it reduces their chances of mammary cancer a great deal if they never go into a heat.

Yeah, from what I can tell, it at least isn't going to do a lot of harm. It was fortunate that the GerShep didn't develop a mammary cancer...that was about the ONLY thing that didn't befall that poor beast by the time she reached her dotage.
Ruby is doing SO much better now that she's over the diarrhea and the UTI, I hate to subject her to surgery just this minute. But if it's safe at six months, we might as well get it over with now. Surely I don't want to have to deal with a dog in heat while I'm flat on my back, nor do I want this little dog to come into heat at all, if it can be avoided.
Hope it doesn't stunt her growth. Now that she seems to be completely well, she's growing apace. I think she's on track to be about the same size as Cassie, which would be fun: a matched set!

Our Rosie was spayed about 5-6 months and is lovely, 24 lbs, correct height. She is 7 years old now and just fine

Glad to hear that! The vet called this afternoon and said he felt she would be fine at this age. So that's a relief...it will remove one potential complication, anyway.
