I couldn't find the food on Dog Food Advisor....too new????

They are using dried peas and dried chickpeas as a significant protein source.

I'd give it a pass. I've seen this trend in "premium" cat foods as well--- the tendency to up the protein content by using pea protein.

The cardinal rule of dog and cat food is the primary PROTEIN source should be animal protein, not corn gluten meal (this is part of how corn got such a bad rap; it's not too bad to use it as the grain-- corn meal, but it should not be used as the protein-- corn gluten meal.)

So now high end foods are using pea or chickpea protein instead of a named meat meal to up their protein content.

It's still a vegetable source of protein. I'm ok with my dogs getting carbs; I don't personally feed grain-free. BUT their protein source should be almost all from meat, not veggies.

It's more true of cats who are obligate carnivores, but I don't want to experiment on my dogs with pea protein and this is a very new ingredient for pets.

i was wondering since they used a lot of veggies instead of other animal protein sources which is what i am used to seeing on the ingredient list of other brands. the only other time i have seen pea protein source used in pet food was when i was going to switch my cat over to taste of the wild but was advised against it since cats are true carnivores.

i usually dont feed grain free as i honestly believe grain is fine and baden seems to well on it as long as its not made with chicken but when u said "id give it a pass" did u mean u think it would be alright to feed him this or that u wouldnt feed him this?

i guess im just trying to find a dog food that wont break my bank but i dont want to compromise his health

i had even seen Iams next to this brand and i know u feed this Iams to your pets. so what do u think of this ingredient list? is it better than the supreme choice?

Entirely true! I also would be wary of a dog food that was high on  beans and peas and whose label claimed those as protein sources. I've been known to feed my dogs peas -- smushed up, otherwise they go right through and come out the other end unchanged. But as a source of carbs, not as a protein source.

I also don't subscribe to the grain-free craze. I do avoid corn, only because I once had a dog who was allergic to it -- and the vet felt corn was pretty high on the list of common allergens.

i am thankful for the insight for sure and the links too! i am down to thinking is ill cook for him but buy a small bag of natures prairie (what hes eating now) so it will last over a longer period of time.

Hi Rebecca. What I meant is I personally would probably not feed it. I've been seeing pea protein crop up in some of the canned catfood I buy and have been trying to avoid it.

I'm not sure about that Iam's formula. I have stuck with Iam's (which I consider a medium grade) because the lamb and rice is very low calorie and poor Maddie is down to barely 2/3 of a cup of food a day as it is. Jack can't eat chicken and so our choices aren't as wide.

I'm not sure about the new garden pea Iam's one either. I do think Iam's has some limited ingredient foods that are newer that might work if you are trying to find something cheaper and are ok with the brand.

I think Chicken Soup is a reasonably priced brand as well? Not sure, haven't looked in awhile.
