I am curious about solutions recently discussed to help dogs go in the snow. Last year Sully was always able to find some patch of shoveled area to go in, but this year has been more problematic. I know it was discussed online here recently, but I don't know if anyone had much success. We had a few inches of snow this weekend and we are expecting three more feet with corgi burying drifts. Has anyone had luck enticing dogs to go in snow? Peeing is no problem, it is #2 that has me stumped.

Becca has the opposite problem. She won't go where it is shoveled or plowed. In the summer she won't go in mowed grass. She won't go in her own yard. We live in Maine so snow is an issue. Becca has learned to circle around and clear a small spot for herself. When it is really deep I will shuffle my feet and make her a bit of a spot. There is an access road down to a dam nearby. It gets plowed and the whole neighborhood walks there dogs down there. I can go off the road there for her.

When Becca had her potty problems after Thansgiving, she was afraid to go after dark, I reinforced her potty command. When she did go, I'd tell her good potty and reward her. Would Sully go in the plowed street or the driveway? I guess I'm not sure if your problem is lack of space or her preferences. Does your landlord provide shoveling and plowing?

I think it is an issue of space and preference. She made it through last winter with no issues but she seems to have forgotten what a New England winter is like. She loves snow, but she hasn't pooped in a couple of days and a 24 hour blizzard is on its way so I hope she overcomes this obstacle. We live in a private elderly/disabled housing development. It is very small, four wooden houses on a private road in a rural town. It is plowed and shoveled by the management company. It is set back in the woods, very pretty but isolated. I have steered her toward a couple of spots that had been shoveled bare which worked last year, but not this year. I love snow but hope we don't lose electricity and heat.

We are supposed to get two feet. I'm hoping we don't lose power. When Becca was having a hard time with the cold I decided that as long as she had the opportunity to poop, I couldn't stress about it. I took her out to her normal spots as often as possible. If she went she went. Becca usually poops twice a day, some cold days she only went once.

Have you tried a long leash so Sully can have more room to turn herself around? Becca hates to go while on a six foot leash.

Hopefully the power stays on for both of us. Stay safe in the storm.

Thanks Marcie. Losing heat would be the worst case scenario. Sully did go today so she is adapting once again. Not sure how she will do during the blizzard but we both love snow so we should be okay. I do hope no one has to go without heat though! Wishing you and yours, and everyone else in New England a safe couple of days!

Good luck and stay safe!!!!!! We have several blizzards most years but not that amount of snow!!!!!!

Shovel an area.  It's what we have to do, actually my husband takes the snow blower to it.  We are expecting 1 to 2 feet of snow here also.  Max has the brains to stay on the deck...it just gets shoveled off and the deck scrubbed down in the spring.  Katie doesn't quite have the brains to not go floundering in the deep snow.

Holly...we are getting the same storm, last I heard was up to 3 feet with blowing and drifting snow.  We live on a 1 block dead end, last time we had a major storm like that we were snowed in for a couple of days.  Of course I had an Irish wolfhound back than so depth of snow wasn't an issue for him.  I am also worrying about losing power and heat.  Crossing fingers that we both (and everyone else) makes it thru this mess with minimual problems.

I hope we all stay safe and warm. Most storms are nothing, but this one sounds like the Blizzard of "78 when we lost electricity for three weeks. I had alternate heat then so I was fine, but this time I have electric heat so I am a bit more concerned about being without heat in sub-zero temps. When I am safe and warm I do love the snow though. So far so good. Not much wind. Wishing everyone the best. Stay warm!

I wouldn't stress about it.   I trained Wally to do his #2 on walks, as I go morning and evening during week days.

He didn't seem to want to go in the backyard and eventhough it's fenced in now he still seemed to keep his play area clean.

However, during some heavy snow fall or cold snaps, I've discovered he would go in the backyard, around the same spot... as a last resort.

We too have much snow coming in and during walks, he'll sometimes will try to go over the snow banc to do his business.   If he can't after a few tries he'lll continue walking faster until he just decides to go on the edge of the snow banc, on the sidewalk.

I have made friends with Doggy Poop Bags and have dispensers in most jackets, car, house, etc.

But I've discovered too when he was younger that shoveling a little part help.    It wouldn't hurt to leave a poop close by where you want him to go, and when you clean up, leave one piece there too.    Having a big stick or branch to pee on could help make it his area.

Everyone with that blizzard...stay safe...never had that much snow even though we are used to blizzards here in MN.

It is still going on and no one has come by the shovel and plow yet but is really cold so the snow is light and fluffy. There is a LOT of it and it is still snowing, but it doesn't stay on the power lines. The poor people in Cape Cod and the islands are not so lucky though. As for my crazy, lazy dog, she is refusing to go out all. I had to drag her  outside. She finally peed in the doorway, just outside the door, then she bolted back inside. Normally she likes snow, but it doesn't usually come three feet at a time. Guess she doesn't like it over her head. The next few days should be interesting. :D

It was up over my knees on this last trip out. I broke trail out to the street. Becca has been loving it so far. This afternoon she didn't want to come back in. I'll be glad when the driveway gets done, not sure when that will happen. if it snows all night then school will be canceled again, another day home with Becca.
