A notice from Ellington Animal Control is making its way around Facebook: A type of low-sugar peanut-butter contains the artificial sweetener xylitol, which is extremely toxic to dogs. Checked Snopes about the peanut butter; didn't get that confirmed or de-confirmed but came up with this excellent article on the dangers of xylitol: http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/xylitol.asp

Did find this at a veterinary site: http://veterinarynews.dvm360.com/xylitol-now-found-certain-peanut-a...

If you like to stuff a Kong with peanut butter or just use it as a treat, READ THE LABEL!!!!! Don't feed anything that says it contains "artificial sweetener."

WAITAMINIT: Let me add to that: Xylitol is billed as a "natural" sweetener, so products that contain the stuff will not say that they contain "artificial" sweeteners. The jar may claim the product is "naturally sweetened" or "contains natural sweetener." Beware anything that makes this claim.

Oh my....how dangerous...even for people!!!!!

Scary stuff!  I buy my peanut butter fresh ground at the health food store, with nothing added. I don't use it for my dogs, but this may be a life saving post for those who do.

I can verify it.  When I had Brady in last month for shots the vet told me to be aware of the xylitol in certain peanut butters.
