Wow, I haven't posted anything on here in forever! It's been a crazy year.

I'm sure that this has been posted before, but I couldn't find it when I searched. I called the vet just to get an idea of how much Penny's annual vaccines are going to cost me. Last year I think I just paid it, but this year money is quite a bit tighter so I need to think before I do it. These just seem expensive to me, but what do I know!

Office visit: $43
Distemper: $20
Heartworm test: $44
Rabies: $18
Lyme: $25
for a grand total
of about $150

And CareCredit mysteriously closed my account, no explanation. That was the one credit card I was able to pay on time! :)

Anyway, if anyone has any thoughts or insight, it would be much appreciated.

Here's an overview of Jasper's vaccines from a vet here in NC just for comparison:

Wellness Exam w/ Vaccs: $16.00
Puppyshot booster: $16.75
Rabies: $13.00
Lyme: $22.00
Bordatella: $14.00

The vaccines don't seem too outrageous compared to mine but I think the office visit/wellness exam at my vet is half price when he gets vaccinated. It's usually $32.00 for an exam without vaccines. That's the only huge difference I can see. : )
Finnigan has coverage through United Pet Care so he gets free anual shots and the office visit is $25. United Pet Care is a discount program not actual insurance so there is no maximum coverage, no deductable etc. You just go to one of the vets enrolled in the program and the benefits have been great for us. It costs I think $9 or $10 a month to enroll. May be worth looking into.
Wow, that does seem a little high to me. My office visit is discounted down to like $16-20 w/ vaccines. Also, since money is so tight right now, Lyla is going to get her last set of boosters at our local SPCA. Only $8 total! It might be worth checking into a low-cost vaccine clinic like that.
I second this idea! I know our local Petco does low-cost vaccinations at least once or twice a month. It can get a bit hectic at times but is worth checking out!
That does seem high - we paid about $155 for both Violet and Magnus last month. We are in Florida so maybe it varies by state. I've heard that some areas do have program helping with vaccine costs - msnbc ran a story about that a couple of weeks ago so you might be able to find something there.

Good luck!
Call around. You would be amazed at how different the prices are between vets. Also, check with your local Humane Society for suggestions. They will usually know where you can get good low cost vet care if they don't do it. That is what my daughter did when she moved to Texas from Michigan and got really good results.
I recently had the same thing with Brian about a month ago. I live near Boston, and we spent around the same prices.

Office Visit/Exam: $56
Distemper: $22
Heartworm/Lyme/Ehrlichia Test: $44

Plus a 12-mo supply of Heartgard at $60 brought me out to a grand total of $185! And I go to a relatively "cheap" vet!

I I refused the Lyme and Lepto vaccs and the stool exam, which saved me over $60 (which may or may not have been smart, but we never did those with my previous dog). I tried to get out of the heartworm test considering that my dog is on Heartgard year round, but the vet requires it to sell the product (although the vet tech told me that normally they would test twice per year, but that since my dog's on year round, they would only test once...anyone know if that's true?)

My town also held a rabies clinic for $10/dog last month, so we did that to cut some costs.
My vet charges $25 for puppy shot/well puppy check up. This includes the shot (distemper/parvo) worming, nail trim and regular exam. I am not sure what they charge for follow up boosters. Leo's neuter included microchip, rabies shot, nail trim, and pain medication for $175.
I know at the Arizona Humane Society here, they charge $18 for all the vaccines, about $30 dollars for the heartworm test. The office visits are $20 dollars however, on vaccine clinic days they waive the fee. This is probably where I will go when I get my puppy because of the price, and it also supports a good cause. You may want to check a shelter in your area and see if they offer something similar. Also, I know my mother has mentioned that at Petco or Petsmart, I don't remember, they had some sort of vaccine clinic as well every now and then, so that may be something that you can check out as well. Good luck!
You may check with your local animal control, humane shelters or pet food stores. Often times there are lost cost vaccinations available. If you do this make sure you keep copies of the paperwork as any vet will require that if you need to board your dog of they need alternate treatment.
Thanks for all the information, I think I am definitely going to look for a low-cost vaccination clinic. I think I've seen one advertised before.

Thanks again!
