Hi All,

Looking for a little advice and thought it best to come to the experts.

Penny is almost a year and a half now, and we have been thinking about a little brother or sister... In your experience, is she at a good age for a new puppy addition? What about sex - would we be better considering a male or a female? We were thinking based upon our reading that maybe a male would be best... She gets along really well with other dogs and LOVES my moms male Peke. We were considering another corgi as we have gone gaga over them since she came into our lives... She is a bit of a schoolyard bully at times - likes to be the center of attention, but some bigger dogs freak her out a little (mostly because they won't let her herd them)

Any thoughts and advice would be welcome!

I think a year and a half is a great age. She's still young enough that she'll want to play with the little one. I would highly suggest a male; two females can sometimes be a problem.

My other suggestion would be that when you talk to the breeder, be very honest about Penny's personality. That way, hopefully the breeder can pick a pup who will fit in well in your home.

Good luck!
In my experience, the sex of the dog did not matter as much as the personality. If your dog is more submissive, you should try to aim for a calmer dog perhaps. If your dog is a bit of an alpha, don't get another alpha. From your description she will probably assert herself as head dog, just keep your eye on her. Just make sure she is not too rough with the new arrival. It is a matter of temperment and personality. Not all people get along, not all dogs do either.

Let them meet first and test the waters. If they get along great outside of the house (always introduce a new arrival outside the home) then I am sure it will be fine.
Agreed and great post :)
I'm thinking that is just about the right time to get a "second" helping of Corgi Lovin' at least we hope so. We have already decided to get a second corgi baby next year when Sami is between 18 & 24 months old, she is just a little over seven months now. Have also decided that with her being ALPHA it will need to be a much more calmer pup. We are sooooo hoping for a little boy, have been talking to the breeder about it. We are so pleased with Samantha that I couldn't think of anyone else I would want to get our pup from. I even talked my husband into us taking a road trip (over 3,000 round trip) to pick up the puppy. Have you thought of getting your second where you got your first? Good luck keep us posted on how the hunt goes.
1.5 years is a great age to add a new baby in my experinance Jordan is about 2 and Teagen is 5 months they play wonderfully together and are quite the duo!!! I have always had males together with no problem the only reason I wanted a female was well because I'd never had one before =)
Well you sound just like me four weeks ago. Kari is my 1 1/2 yo female with that type of personality. She likes dogs big and small but can be shy sometimes. We just picked up a male corgi pup and she loves him. Her reaction was more like oh yay, a toy that plays back! As of now it's still like that and we do have to regulate play so no one gets hurt. In short, age is fine and I have heard that two females can be a problem but without personal experience I can't say that true. I would say to get a male so you get the full corgi experience. Males and females are different personalities so why not get some variety.
Soffie was a year and 3 months old when we got Griffyn! The best thing we ever did!!! They absolutely love each other!
Pebble is 6 months old now and I am also thinking of adding a new member.
Maybe early next year.
Probably a male tri-color PWC.

I heard it is easier to train the second dog right?
Pebble is fully potty trained now and I hope my future pup can learn from her.
My experience is that it is easier to train a 2nd pup as they have someone to follow and learn from! They can pick up any other habits also so if a dog barks etc. they may learn that! I think a year to 18 months apart is a good time for a new pup as they still will play but the 1st will be fully trained by then. PS I have added a new pup about every year for 4 years and the older dog/s have been helpful with the training!
