"Food Pets Die For: Shocking Facts About Pet Food" (edited w/ more info)

Has anyone read this book by Ann N. Martin?
I just read the third edition, and feel strongly that every pet owner should read it and pass it along.

EDITED TO ADD: more information at:
http://www.newsagepress.com/foodpetsdiefor.html

She gets down to the nitty gritty of the pet food industry, including where all the ingredients come from, shocking horrors on how very little rules there are on pet foods, and the FDA's responses to pressing questions. There's information on every aspect of commercial pet food, and this book may be upsetting, but every pet owner needs to read it. It might make you think twice about what you give your beloved Corgi.

I agree about PETA.
The comment that it is not directly about Iams was not directed at just you. The thread in general was going off topic, so I corrected it.
This book has nothing to do with PETA. Simply Ann N. Martin and her own research and discoveries. You should read it. Everyone should. You might learn a thing or two. I know I did.
I'm with you on this one with PETA. I'm an animal lover and a vegetarian but in no way do I support anything PETA says or does. But I can go on literally forever, so I'll stop with that. Just a side note, HSUS has been responsible for some bad things too, like the recent attempt at mandatory spay/neuter laws in CA.
Sounds like we found one thing we all agree on. :-)
I know! And that's great! Being vegetarian, I often get people who automatically associate me with PETA. Blech!
I just finished this book the other night. I put it on hold at the library as soon as I saw this post and once I got it home, couldn't stop reading until I was done. I have spent a lot of time researching pet foods in the past, so things such as nutritional quality (or lack there of) of leading brands were not a surprise to me, but lack of regulation, the expose of rendering, and the animal testing aspects were horrific and quite shocking! After reading this book I check the ingredients of my cat's Hill's prescription food (which, I had a feeling wasn't the best but had never checked because the vet said she needed it) and I appalled at what is it in!! As we speak, I am waiting for the vet to call me back in hopes of finding other dietary options to manage her GI disease. Thank you for the suggestion. It was a very informative read!
Can I ask what GI problems your cat has??? I have a cat that throws up all the time but I have found a food that works...just wondering...
She was diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) about 6 months ago. She has not had the bowel biopsy that would mean an "official" diagnosis, but the vet is about 95% sure that's what it is given her symptoms and the fact that the Rx diet and a shot of prednisone calmed it down (that and the fact that in her x-ray her bowel was very swollen). We got this diagnosis after we went to a vet that specializes in cat disease. Our regular vet at the time ran hundreds and hundreds of dollars of tests and was stumped. He wanted to do a very expensive exploratory surgery. I went to the cat vet for a second opinion and she had it pin-pointed in 20 minutes. I'm glad you were able to find a good food. Right now my Izzy is only healthy on the Hill's i/d diet which is not very high quality despite the hefty pricetag, but I assume it has to be better for her to be eating something and not vomiting than eating healthier foods and never keeping it down!
Those are the things that shocked me, too. And the list of ingredients that are APPROVED by the FDA?! "dehydrated garbage" "dehydrated animal waste". Wow.
I'm so glad at least one person was able to read this book. I wish everyone could- or at least wanted to. I have loaned my copy out to many of our customers since I read it, and everyone that has read it that I know is glad they did.
I own this book and it helped to open my eyes to the pet food industry.
I haven't read the book but I did alot of reasearch before getting Ein. (He is my first dog since I was six.) I was very shocked when I read what kind of ingrediants they put in the food. Now I read labels before I buy anything for my dog, even treats. If I wouldn't eat the stuff in there, I not going to give it to Ein. I just started making Ein's treats myself today. They just finished baking about an hour ago. He loved it.
That's great! What recipe did you use? I'd be interested in knowing. I've been thinking about getting into a little dog baking myself!
I'm also interested in the recipe! I love baking! But I definitely don't need it... so maybe baking for Conan will fill my baking drive haha!
