For a while now, Shelby has looked underweight. Is 20lb a normal weight for a corgi. She was also the runt of the littler. I feed her twice a day and she usually eats all of it. I am very worried for her because her ribs stick out a LOT. In absolutely no way have I ever mistreated or abused my wonderful little dog. Just last night, he wasacting very strangley and whinning. We could not determine the source of the problem. She curled up and went right back to bed. The whole event lasted less than a minute. She has been vomiting a lot recently. Please help me, I'm very worried and I am scheduling an appointment with our vet.

Update: She has been diagnosed with congenital kidney disease. Does anyone who of a way to make her more comfortable?

She went in to the vet today. We'll get the test results tomorrow.
She has been given AD food and something to make her stomach settle.
a/d is a good food for short-term support when they need more calories. Please keep us updated.
Glad she got to the vet! Keep us updated!Did the vet have any thoughts or say she was skinny???
Yes, she did say she was on the thin side. The a/d food should help. She gave us 3 days supply. The vet said she showed the results for heart worms and that it was an easy fix, but we don't know until the results get in.
Wait, she DOES have heartworm? Or she doesn't?
Sorry, I meant might have the possibility. From the test results, they think she has some disease that affects one of her glands controlling the release of hormones. She's going back in tomorrow and if they are 100% sure she's got it, they said she can take pills for it.
Appearantly, she has Addison's disease.
I just found this, not sure if this is the medication that you're getting, but I think it's always important to know what new stuff is out there....oh, and hugs to you and your furbaby!

How is Addison's disease treated?

Once the disease is diagnosed, the treatment is fairly straightforward. The standard treatment involves replacing the mineralocorticoids and glucocorticoids in the body. The drug most commonly used to accomplish this is Florinef (fludrocortisone). Florinef is usually given twice a day. Initially, the blood sodium and potassium levels are monitored to help obtain the correct dose. After the animal is regulated, then the levels are rechecked 2 to 3 times a year and adjustments in dosing are made as needed.

A newer option in the treatment of Addison's disease has recently been made available. The new medication is an injectable medication called DOCP. The injection is long acting and only needs to be given every 25 days. DOCP was available years ago, but was taken off the market and recently reintroduced as an approved drug for dogs. DOCP has been intensively tested and been shown to provide better electrolyte regulation than Florinef. Some animals on DOCP may also need to be placed on a low maintenance dose of prednisone. Novartis is manufacturing this drug and more information on DOCP can be obtained by calling their customer service number at 1-800-332-2761.
Thanks, I was just reading up on it today.
Did they do an ACTH challenge test? Because I bred Danes before I had Cardigans, I know WAAAAY too much about Addison's. You need to make sure you have a REAL diagnosis, and as far as I know the ACTH challenge is the only thing that makes it definite.

Bobbie Marie Palsa (http://canineaddisonsinfo.com/) is THE expert on canine Addisons. Please read through her site and do not hesitate to contact her personally. You can tell her that Joanna Kimball, Astro's breeder, sent you. I've talked with her a few times and she owns the grandson of one of my dogs; she is wonderful and SO helpful, but no-nonsense. Reading through the site will give you a very good grasp on what the disease is and how best to treat it, if that's actually what she has.

The great news is that Addison's is now very treatable and dogs can have a very good quality of life if you are careful about dosing and keep up on the dog's general health.

Good luck and I will be thinking of you.
I don't know, I was at school all day when my mom dropped her off. I will find out though. They drew blood and then vet gave her a shot of something and she had an allergic reaction. When they gave her something to couter-act the raction, they drew more blood. We'll get results tomorrow or Friday.
