I'm not sure if this has happened to anyone. I noticed my Newman hiding when I get the loaf of bread out to make toast. He starts to shake really bad and when I try to call him or pet him, he won't budge. This happens everytime I get the bread. I thought it was the sound of the plastic, but I think he knows I'm going to use the toaster. I'm not sure why he is reacting this way. I've even tried other plastic bags to see if he was afraid of the sound, but he was fine. I'm not sure if he's afraid the sound the toaster makes when you push the handle down, or when the bread pops up when done. I've never seen this before. I feel bad for him because he gets so shaky and scared. He does calm down after a while. Share your thoughts on this. If you have a Corgi that has some weird random phobias, I would like to know. Thanks :).

Hi Cat. I am sorry to hear about the fear issues.

You are so right that a dog does not have to be abused or poorly socialized to be fearful, or have any other personality issue.

I recently read a wonderful article about rescue; I wish I remember where I saw it. The woman who wrote it said so often people adopt a dog from a shelter, and it's fearful, and they assume it was abused. But she said really that is so often not the case, and they know of dogs whose backgrounds they are very familiar with who are fearful, and often it's the result of poor genetics.

When we talk about the things good breeders do, high on the list is breeding sane dogs.
Aber hates the vacuum cleaner and barks and runs from it ever time. He also barks at the coffee maker, but he really seems to love it. He gets all excited when you put beans in, then barks like mad when the grinder starts. He's never had coffee, of course, so I have no clue why it seems like the superawesome thing it does to him.
Radar has several things he reacts too and I am thinking that it has to do with the high pitches bothering his ears.
Our coffee pot has a high pitch signal when it finishes. Radar has a barking frenzy!
The ceiling fan when we turn it off or on and the chains clank together...or my husband even pointing to the ceiling fan gets him frenzied up!
Christmas time and all the jingle bells...holidays sounds...yep you got it! Frenzy time. If we mute the TV where the noise comes from...then Radar shuts up! nothing like having a mute button for you dog :)
Telephones and cell phones...he doesn't like them...especially if I am the one making or receiving the calls! After several minutes of protests he does shut up...lets say we are working on this issue!
.....and maybe it has to do with his name....RADAR...maybe we need to rename him something more generic like Bud, Bailey, or Buddy :) He is a good watchdog...those loveable ears miss very little. There are many moments that he is a sweet little guy when he rolls over and stretches out for an evening belly rub....aaaahhhthe life of a Corgi ;)

While I come offering no advice or anything useful, perhaps some lols will ease the situation?

lol! :)

Some of this is just mystery. Gwynnie is terrified of soap bubbles (at least used to be); they're as bad as thunder.
Potu doesn't like the electric mixer and its near impossible to get his attention with treats when its on, so he has to be taken on a walk if we want to beat something, or shit in thr farthest away room. He was scared of the printer when he was a pup, but has gotten over that. He also doesn't like our paper shredder. He's not afraid of the vaccuum but loves to hunt it, so again, he has to leave the house for me to vaccuum,
Actually radar does not like the vaccuum either. Whenever I vaccuum or have to make several phone calls and
need peace and quiet, Radar goes into one of our spare rooms. He usually goes willingly as I throw some crackers
into the room for him to fetch. Whenever I receive phone calls that is another issue that we are working on.
After I am on the phone for a few minutes he quiets down...but the first few minutes are horrible for the person I am
talking with...as you know how loud Corgis can get. It is usually me that he raises cane with when I am on the phone and gets a bit nippy once in a while. Any suggestions out there for how to break him of this?
I've had Nibbler outside on a leash while someone was running a chainsaw and she couldn't care less, but I pull out the vacuum and she runs outside and refuses to come back in until it's out of sight! It's not nearly as loud so I don't know.
Eddy is afraid of a match being lit. He hears it and comes running and barking at the closed bathroom door! CanNOT be discreet with a corgi!!!
For sure! They have "radar" ears....no pun intended about our Radar! When we named him Radar O'Reilly....it was because he had "big ears" and was born on St. Patricks day...he has lived up to the name Radar many times over. The other day some helicopters were flying by and just like on MASH he ran to the door looked up at them
and started to bark. I couldn't help but laugh at him and how his name fit him so well. We do like the show MASH,
but didn't realize how well the name suited our little buddy. Sometimes when I am quietly getting a midnight snack
Radar shows up for his share no matter how quiet I am. Gotta love them Corgis!
