We've been feeding Olive at 0700 and 1900 pretty much on the nose since we got her Tuesday, and we've been giving her 1/3 cup of dry food. We also use the itty bitty Nature Recipe training treats. Question being, how long do we give her to eat before we take the bowl away? Should we be feeding her lees food at 8wks old? She'll eat some of it, and then want to go explore, then go eat a little more a few minutes later.

Also, after both feedings she turns into a Gremlin. Play bites, barks, growls, and zippin around the living room as if she were possessed!

I would be feeding my 8 week old pups 3 x's a day and at least 1/2 cup! Depending on the food but I looked at both my Solid Gold and Premium Edge and they recommend 1 1/2 to 2 1/4th cups per day. NOT that they need that much but make sure she is getting enough! I am wondering if she is not eating as it is too hard for her? You could add a little chicken broth or even warm water to soften the food. It is normal for a puppy that age to get distracted and come back a little later to eat more! I would leave it for at least 1/2 hour. If she's the only dog I would just leave it out for her but that is my personal opinion! As for the playing after eating...she's a pup and this is normal BUT watch for the biting as you will want to correct that now! When she starts teething she may also not be able to eat the hard kibbles! Good luck on your new addition, she's a cutie!
I would feed three times a day at that age. We brought Jack home at 10 weeks and I think he was getting about one-and-a-quarter cups total or so a day (spread over the three feedings, with the smallest feeding being lunch), but I can't really recall. I would probably leave it down for 15-20 minutes, and make sure the kibble size is small enough for her.
3x seems like so much food for such a little thing! This is our first dog, so we know nothing... lol. Jess grew up with a few, but never had one as her own. I had fish... ha!
Puppies actually eat more than adults because they are growing.

Think of how much food a twelve-year-old boy can eat!
What brand is she eating and how much does she weigh? Was she wormed right before you picked her up? If she wasn't (and I mean like a day or two before; that's as long as I'd consider a worming valid), she should be re-wormed and that may help with the hunger issue.

If she's not clearing her plate (1/3 cup is fine for a puppy if it's certain brands; not enough for others, which is why I asked about the brand name) eagerly I'd first worm her and then consider mixing it with a high-quality canned food. Puppies are usually used to softer stuff and transitioning right to dry can be disconcerting to them.

I feed 2x a day at eight weeks. There's no problem with that as long as they're growing and thriving. If they're not, or if they have any symptoms of hypoglycemia, feeding more often is a good idea.
We're feeding her Blue Buffalo for puppies, and she weighs 6lbs. She was wormed the day we picked her up, and have the next few months of deworming on que. We took her to the vet per our contract with the breeder two days after we adopted her and she checked out a-ok. The breeder also was feeding her dry kibble (Eukanuba) and gave us some to mix in with what we currently feed her. Also, we give her one of the Blue Buffalo biscuits in the afternoon sometimes...
Several people here feed the Blue Buffalo...I think it's a good food. You have to remember that she is a baby and will double in weight in a few months and then triple what she is now and end up at least 4 times (24#'s). Puppies get much more food than adults as they they constantly are growing and developing. To compare it to a child and feeding them every few hours until they reach a certain age. Her bones, teeth and all of her body is needing plenty puppy nutrients to give her a healthy start. I'm glad your breeder sent along some food to mix. Make sure she is able to chew this ok or add some soft food or broth to soften. Do you know if the breeder was still doing this and then again at teething time she may look like she's not eating when it will be her not able to chew the kibbles.
We have my Jackson (12 weeks) on Solid Gold. He loves it. My vet recommended 1/8th of a cup 3 times a day. I think this has something to do with why he scarfs it down. I've moved him up to 1/4 cup 3 times a day... And when he weighs in on Monday I will ask about adding more. I think he's under ten pounds or close to it, so a little small for his age.

When do you guys recommend moving a puppy to two feedings a day?

And I agree about the gremlin activity! Jackson gets so hyper after he eats until he uses the bathroom. So I try to dedicate a little time to wear him out. It makes us all happier pets and peoples.
