I was hoping we wouldn't have to run into this problem until later, but mother nature threw us Floridians another curveball this evening with heavy thunderstorms... which for Olive translated too "I need to go potty!"  I'm surprised at how well potty trained she is already, because Jess said she ran to the other side of the house after seeing/hearing the rain and around a corner before she squated AND arched her little back... poor thing!  Jess said she came back around the corner with sad eyes and head down, knowing she had done something she shouldn't have done in the house.  Couldn't really take her outside though with the lightning, even though she was softly barking at the door to let Jess know she needed to go out.  What's the best thing to do in these situations?  Jess and I agreed not to scold her, as there's really not a whole lot we could do.  Any suggestions and help are welcomed!  Hopefully by the summer when she's 6mths old she'll be able to hold it longer... yes?

Sidney hates to get wet and is very reluctant to go outside when it is raining. We've had a week of constant rain here in San Diego, so he's just had to deal with it, albeit grudgingly. When he was younger I had to put a leash on him and walk him outside, standing in the rain with him until he went.

we don't really have lightning much here, and I'm sure that adds another level of concern. Can you get some potty pads and chose a section of the house where she'd be allowed to go in a storm? I've also seen this thing on an infomercial called a "porch potty" that looks like a welcome mat made out of artificial turf. Maybe something like that would work?
Just wanted to add, I did a little research on a product called a "Potty Patch" and you'll want to AVOID this one. Apparently they have non-existant customer service and no contact info. I've heard of some folks making their own similar product. Or find one in a store where you don't have to order online.
Thunder and lightning are definitely an issue here in Naples too. But with both Soffie and Griffyn, I bit the bullet, put my rubber boots on and took them right out in the rain! And then acted like it was as normal as if the sun was shining brightly!! Let me tell you.... I had a couple of times when lightning shook my boots!!! But I stayed fast. It's tough but it worked for us.
Yeah, I have to do the same every time because I don't have a fenced yard. Poor puppy would cling to the wall as much as possible and rarely poop. He'd hold it for 24 hours if it rains, I don't know how he does it.
Both of my guys have been like this at one point or another. Since I crate train, if they didn't go potty, they went right back into their crate. Then they would get to go out again in 30-60 min. If they still didn't go, back in the crate. We just kept this process going until they went, they almost always would. The only exception was when Sky was a pup and absolutely refused to go, he did poop and pee in his crate in the middle of the night one night... but he never refused to go in the rain again, lol.
I took mine out to potty this morning, and none of them went. When the rain stopped for awhile they relieved themselves. I felt so bad. They hold it for so long. The only bad thing with thunder and lightning during the night was, a very scared dog under the covers, and another one making noises and bouncing (like if it was a game) on top of me the whole night.

I used to have puppy training pads around for this cases. But once Nala learned to go out, she holds it. I try to keep an eye on the weather, and give an extra walk if it's too cloudy. If it's not raining too hard, they will go out. But like last night, they would look out and then look at me like saying "mom, you're kidding". I stand with them outside, to encourage them, but must of the time they will hold. Good luck!
Take her out as many times as possible and check the weather often. If you know that the storm is coming take her out and make sure al the business is done. If she's not afraid of umbrella it should be easier.
Shiro hates the rain and is terrified of umbrellas, so I just have to wait until it calms down a little and run out before it starts pouring again.
I swear it rained and stormed for 2 weeks starting the night we brought Bella home. I did the same as Judi and we went out with the rubber boots...not fun and it was frightening! Make sure her collar is on tight but it was the best as Bella now goes out alone and the rain does not bother her one bit! A special place in the house sounds okay but I hope that she won't start using this instead of going out!
Hello fellow Floridian, like Judi, I put on my rain jacket and walk my dogs in the rain. During the Floridian summer , tune into WESH 2's channel 2.2 or log on to wesh2 weather for up to date report, Tony Mainolfi does a great job predicting the rain / lightening path.

During those summer rain days, I don't use my regular leash and only use the flexi leash for mobility, it allows me nt to step in puddle. Never use the umbrella and invest in a good rain jacket. Train your dog with the "go potty" command first thing before their his walk.

Read the FAQ for more potty training info. My advise is don't create another potty place at home, it will confuse the little pup and prolong the training process.

Good luck and have him well trained before the hurricane season, if you've lived through Charlie, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne, you know it can rain for days before the hurricane even make landfall. My dogs have mastered peeing / pooping in a Cat 3 hurricane storm :)
