Hi Rebecca. A food switch can cause tummy upsets. I usually switch over a 2-3 week period, a tablespoon or so per day. Many other things can cause it though too.

How bad is his diarrhea? If he just has soft stools and is pooping a normal amount (every 3 hours or so would not be uncommon for a young pup) then I would not worry. If he has had liquid diarrhea for two straight days, I would probably call a vet. Dehydration would be a real concern at that young an age. Do you have an emergency vet in your area who would be open on a weekend? If so, call and see if they can give advice over the phone, as most of them charge a fair amount to walk in the door.

How long ago did you bring him home? It's not uncommon for pups to get a case of coccidiosis when they move to a new home and that can cause diarrhea.
thank you for replying. he is going at his normal times but it is watery, i think i switched way to fast, i have only had him for a week and tried to switch him. since tomorrow is Sunday no one is open:(. we do have another dog but he has all his shots and everything. im scared that teddy may have parasites but we were just at a vet last Saturday and they said he was very healthy. im scared for him. should i completely switch him to his old food? hes eating just his new food right now...i knew i switched him to fast. on the bag it said to only go 5 days at the most, i should of just gone with my instinct
yes, switch his food gradually, mix in the new food with the old.
I agree with what Beth says! I don't think it would be yogurt(how much did you give him?) as I always gave mine this as pups but the combination of switching food too fast and how long ago did he get his shots?
he got his shots a week ago today. the person i got him from said one or two table spoons of yogurt. i gave it to him the night before he started having all the problems so i wasnt sure
soak his food as this will keep him hydrated.
I would go back to half old and half new...we all learn things when we have pups....if he has parasites...this can be fixed so don't worry too much about your other dog just make sure the pup is ok...I like the idea of adding water to his food ...if he'll eat it. Is he still acting fine?
The yogurt probably is not the problem. I bet it is the food, the only worrying thing is that he has been watery for two days. You can give him some Pepto (about 1 tbsp) and a little canned pumpkin to try to firm up the stool. Is he still eating, drinking and playing? If he is not doing these things than I would get him into the vet first thing Monday. If he is acting fine other than the diarrhea then try the Pepto and pumpkin for a few days and see if that helps.

Also, like someone else said, you need to make sure he is staying hydrated. If he isn't drinking enough then you can mix some pedialyte or gatorade into the water, or get the pedialyte popsicles. Dogs LOVE popsicles! Pretty much anything to get lots of hydration into him.
I would also go back to half old food and half new food. I would also give him a smaller than normal meal in the morning, then wait about two hours and give him the rest so it's not so much on his system at once, and see if that helps settle his tummy. Once he's settled, you can go back to normal feeding schedule.

To make sure he's hydrated, you can gently pinch a fold of skin above his shoulder blades. It should pop right back to normal. If it stays raised, then he's dehydrated and you would need to get more fluid in him.

I agree ice is a good idea to get more fluids; most dogs like even plain ice.

And if it persists or stools stay soft, I would call the vet Monday morning to be sure there's not an underlying issue besides food switch. WIth a puppy, I would prefer to let them settle in for a good two weeks before even starting to switch. Don't feel bad about what's already been done as we all have lots to learn along the way! :-) But for the next puppy you have, keep that in mind. Moving is stressful, even more so if they were not fully weaned before leaving their birth home (though most good breeders complete weaning some time before placement). and the food switch can bother some of them (though others are fine).

Good luck and let us know how he does!
thank you so much all for your help! :) i was just so scared and didnt know what to do. he is still acting normal, he is drinking water a lot and i just tested to see if he was hydrated by pulling his skin up, it went back into place right away. he went out this morning and it wasn't too watery but i will keep a close eye to make sure he isnt getting worse. i am definitely going to go a lot slower with his food:) im pretty sure thats what it was. for some reason i keep thinking it was a week before i switched him over but it was only four days, i guess its just time fly's when u have your fur baby with you lol if it keeps going on i will definitely call the vet on Monday and at my hubbys lunch break i will go get canned pumpkin. i heard that rice also works, is that true? and how long should i mix his food together? i dont wanna make him sick again
I would use it till it's gone as it won't harm him but don't give him too much at once. I would also keep a can of this on hand...just in case!
i will always keep a can handy. i took him outside again and it was firmer and not so watery so im hoping this was just the food switch and not something terrible. but is it true that white rice will work just as well as pumpkin? and if so how how much do i give him?
