So, I was playing grape fetch with my dog Buddha last night and tonight; thought it was hilarious. I posted this as my status on facebook when I got a call from my friend Rachael who told me that grapes are toxic to dogs!!!! Needless to say, I started FREAKING out. I researhed online, called a toxin hotline and then called the emergency clinic. My roommate and boyfriend initially told me not to take him and that he would be just fine but something just didn't feel right. He had around 15 grapes, weighs 18lbs, and was just neutered last week. He had been acting very jittery and hyper which I read was the first sign of poisoning. The Dr. told me to induce vomiting with salt. I gave him salt, but instead of vomiting he just laid there and looked very lethargic. I called the Dr. again and he told me to bring Buddha in. I raced to the clnic, even shook Buddha once bc I thought he had stopped breathing and finally got him to the clinic. They took him from me and I asked the receptionist what the prognosis and her facial affect was horrible and she said they were worried about kidney failure!! I started crying and was basically a mess. Everyone else in the waiting room was fine. The receptionist led me to a room and told me to wait for the Dr., I was panicking at this point. Buddha is only 7 months old and he really means the world to me; and my birthday is on Saturday! My boyfriend left his poker game (which he was winning) to come and console me which really meant and helped a lot. By the time the doctor came in I was sitting on his lap and sobbing while he was rubbing my back and telling me it was going to be ok. Jesus, and I am sure my eyes were blood shot. Anyway, he asked me a lot of questions and told me all the things they would have to do and to wait about an hour. SO, Jer went to walmart to buy him some wet dog food (I didnt even ask him to come or do any of this, he is a keeper fish for sure) and me some orange juice and then we both waited it out. I got Buddha back (222 dollars later) but we will not know if he will be ok until 72 hours have past. I was given some signs to look out for and Buddha has peed which is a really good sign, I just hope my baby is going to be ok. This has really made me realize how much Buddha means to me and what a joy it has been to have him in my life. I really believe he came to me for a reason.

It has also made me realize how much I really love my sweet boyfriend and how lucky I am to have my 2 men in my life.

I just read this & I do hope Buddha will be okay. My heart goes out to you both. It is a good thing that his kidneys are working and he's peed.

My corgi, Holly, found my husband's chocolate stash. Vet said to induce vomiting too, so I gave her some water and then stuck my finger down her throat. It worked, she brought up the equivalent of three family chocolate bars. I held her the whole night to keep her from racing around like a greyhound. That was the effect of the chocolate, her heart was racing. She made it through the night & it is now some years since that time. I still recall how terrified I was almost losing my beautiful girl!

I hope it will be the same for you & Buddha, all the best my thoughts & prayers are with you both.

poor boy I hope he gets better soon! another crazy ingredent that can be lethal to canines is ZYLATOL a sugar sub. so if you've got gum or anything sweet read the package and see what kind of sweetner is used!
do you mean Xylitol? That's the one they put in sugar-free gums...
yes that one .
Oh, I'm so sorry! It's just fairly recently that they added grapes to the "toxic" list and for awhile some trainers used to use raisins as a reward.

I hope he's ok and when he is, make sure you talk to your regular vet about any follow-up or special diet that's easier on his kidneys, and also about what you should have in your emergency kit to induce vomiting. I think I heard somewhere that peroxide will do it but I'm not sure. So I guess I need to look into that myself.

I am so sorry your Buddha is sick and yes, it does sound like your boyfriend is a keeper.
Beth,
If you find out about peroxide please post I have seen this recently also!
Yes, give them approx 1 tbsp per 10 lbs to induce vomiting. This works on most dogs, although it does need to be "fresh" peroxide since it's the fizzing that makes them vomit.
Thank You for the peroxide amount. I use peroxide for much of my cleaning so I always have a few bottles around!
Yes Peroxide works very well. One time Callie inhaled some Tylonol that I dropped and I called the vet and they told me to give her 1 tbsp per 10 pounds and within 30 seconds she threw up. She hated me after that... and warning it does make them throw up a few times or at least until it all gets out of their system.
We will be thinking of Buddha today and hoping everything turns out fine.
So glad to hear Budda is doing better, Here is a site that list toxic food for dogs:

I don't give my dogs people food, but unfortunately, my husband does. I've tried to inform him of what is bad and what isn't. I almost messed up last week by putting some stale raisins out in the yard for birds to eat. I just tossed a small handful out when it hit me that the birds might not eat them all before the dogs go out again. Stopped me in my tracks.
