Tuesday may be a medium sized dog but she has a giant bark!  Anytime anyone knocks, or she hears someone outside of apartment door, she starts barking her little head off.  She will eventually calm down, but only after she rushes up to see the individual showing them she's boss.

This is not good.  For many reasons.  Mostly because it's teaching her an improper place in the family but also because we live right next to the apartment manager and she's letting us live there with Tuesday as a special favor to us.

Please help!

Corgis are big barkers. They are not quiet dogs. They were all-purpose farm dogs, and part of their job was to warn off strangers (dogs, cats, people, the neighbor's cows.)

It takes an awful lot of work to train a dog not to bark if someone knocks, and I have never lived with a dog of any breed who did not bark when someone knocked at the door. It's not an "improper place in the family" thing, as even low-ranking dogs will sound an alarm if strangers approach.

It would take an awful lot of training to teach her not to do this, and even then it may simply not be possible.
Thanks! Good to know this. Tuesday is my first dog and sometimes I just don't know what's typical or not.
What is a reasonable expectation is to get her to stop when you tell her it's all ok. What worked with my big barker, with no real training, was looking outside to see what he was barking at, and then saying something like "Thank you!" and then "It's ok." Of course they don't really know what the words mean, but it gets across the point that you've checked it out and it's all safe and the dog can stop alerting you now.
You've described Stanley's behavior here. He's the slef -appointed protector of our household against all threats, real or imagined. We haven't really curbed his uncanny ability to react to every apartment neighbor no matter the hour (thanks late night partiers!), but we can usually get him to cool it fairly soon, either by shushing him or making him do a sit or down. And for some reason, he just randomly ignores noises that we totally expect him to 'protect' us from.

My corgi, Rockstar, barks at the door, like a normal corgi. What really cracks me up is when he notices "new" things in the house. Like the day that I got a new suitcase and didn't tell him. I took it out of my bedroom before he came out of his kennel. Oops. After a good talking-to, Rockstar put that suitcase in its place. I can think of more examples, but I won't bore you all to death
Wrigley does the same thing! In fact, his bark sounds so ferocious that the maintenance man thought we had a huge dog in here. He came to fix our dishwasher and knocked on the door while we weren't home and convinced himself it wasn't safe to come in. He felt pretty ridiculous when he came back later and saw a little Corgi mix smiling up at him.
Your really asking alot to not have a Corgi bark when there's someone at the door. Actually I wouldn't try to stop my three from barking. It's their job to protect the house and owners. There was a time when only the one red would bark but now all three will run barking when someone knocks. They even sense when one of us comes home. Let them bark and then after you have acknowledged that your aware that there is someone at the door they should pretty much settle down.
I think this pretty much sums it up....

HOW DIFFERENT BREEDS OF DOGS WOULD CHANGE A LIGHT BULB...

Corgi:
I will bark at the light bulb until it comes out on it's own accord. Then I will bark at the new bulb until it jumps into the socket.

Golden Retriever:
The sun is shining, the day is young, we've got our whole lives ahead of us, and you're inside worrying about a stupid burned out bulb?

Border Collie:
I can do it just as quickly and efficiently as any human can. And then I'll replace any wiring that's not up to code.

Dachshund:
You know I can't reach that stupid lamp!

Rottweiler:
Make me.

Lab:
Oh, me, me!! Puhleeez let me change the light bulb! Can I? Can I? Huh? Huh? Huh? Can I?

Newfoundland:
Let the Border Collie do it and then you can feed me while he's busy.

Jack Russell Terrier:
I'll just pop it in while I'm bouncing off the walls and furniture.

Poodle:
I'll just blow into the Border Collie's ear and he'll do it. And by the time he finishes rewiring the house, my nails will be dry.

Cocker Spaniel:
Why change it? I can still pee on the carpet in the dark.

Doberman Pinscher:
Change it?? While it's dark, I'm going to sleep on the couch.

Irish Setter:
Huh?

Boxer:
Who cares? I can still play with my squeaky toys in the dark...

Mastiff:
We Mastiffs are NOT afraid of the dark.

Chihuahua:
"Yo quiero Taco Bulb."

Pointer:
I see it, the light bulb, there it is, there it is, right there....

Greyhound:
If it isn't moving, who cares?

Australian Cattle Dog:
First, I'll put all the light bulbs in a little circle....

Old English Sheep Dog:
Light bulb? I'm sorry, but I Don't see a light bulb. Maybe if you just trim the hair over my eyes a bit...

Hound Dog:
Zzzzzzzzzz...
Great list except based on our doberman she would say "lightbulb? Whats a lightbulb?"
Great list!
I agree that a bit of barking is going to happen and i do like knowing when someone is there. I just need her to stop on my command, not just when the door opens and she sprints out to "greet" our visitor. I"ll try the treats.
Noodles barks whenever someone comes to our front door or if he hears something outside. I just tell him to go look out the window to make sure there is really something or someone to be barking at. I follow him to the window as well. Once he sees the people he knows or if there is nothing outside, then he stops barking. If someone really is at the door, all I have to say is "it's okay" and he will usually stop barking. We had teenagers trick-or-treating last year and they rang our door bell and then ran because of hearing Noodles bark. One kid didn't run away in time and when I opened the door, he started laughing because there was Noodles with his bunny butt shaking and he was so excited to have visitor's at the front door. The kid yelled back to his friends that it was okay to come to our house. I had to laugh because just before those teenage boys, I had a little 3 year old girl who walked straight in to our house to love on Noodles and she wouldn't leave. Her dad had to come get her. Oh the power of a bark!
