As most of you know I rescued my Bentley in April with a lot of medical problems. He is 8 yrs old & I was the only one in 8 days of being at the shelter who wanted him. This poem I found makes me wonder if this is what he was & is now thinking................

The Old Ones

One by one they pass my cage,

Too old, too worn, too broken, no way.

Way past his prime he can’t run and play,

Then they shake their heads slowly and go on their way.

A little old man, arthritic and sore,

It seems I am not wanted anymore.

I once had a home, I once had a bed,
A place that was warm, and where I was fed.

Now my muzzle is grey, and my eyes slowly fail,

Who wants a dog so old and so frail?

My family decided I didn’t belong,

I got in their way, my attitude was wrong.

Whatever excuse they made in their head

Can’t justify how they left me for dead.

Now I sit in this cage, where day after day,

The younger dogs get adopted away.

When I had almost come to the end of my rope,

You saw my face and I finally had hope.

You saw through the gray, and the legs bent with age,

And felt I still had life beyond the cage.

You took me home, gave me food and a bed,

And shared your own pillow with my poor tired head.

We snuggle and play, and you talk to me low,

You love me so dearly and want me to know.

I may have lived most of my life with another,

But you outshine them with a love so much stronger.

I promise to return all the love I can give,

To You, my dear person, as long as I live.
I may be with you for a week or for years,

We will share many smiles, you will no doubt shed tears.

And when the time comes that God deems I must leave,

I know you will cry and your heart will grieve.

And when I arrive at the Bridge, all brand new,

My thoughts and my heart will still be with you.

And I will brag to all who will hear,

Of the person who made my last days so dear.

OK...it touched my heart and made me cry as I am thinking of rehoming a younger rescue of mine because he is being "bossy" to my older one who I love dearly! Thank-you for sharing and if all those old ones could find homes! My husband always tells me I should open up a nursing home for old dogs! "thank-you" for giving Bentley a loving home!
Very touching! Bentley appreciates you greatly for all youve done for him :)
Wahhhh!
I adopted my old man Bruce when he was 10. It was his last chance...if he didn't get adopted, he was going to be put down. He's 16 now and such a good sweet boy.
Awwwww!
A wonderful touching poem. And a tribute to you for giving Bentley his forever home!!
oh yea.. had to run away in the office to wipe those tears lol. This is a great poem. Thank you for sharing!
Tears from me also. Although our Tenby was 6 months when we rescued him, that feeling of taking him away from his terrible life is so wonderful. Every day I look at him with a special smile, he may be our crazy wild child tri but we are so happy he is part of our family. (even on his most goofy days)
Very sweet and touching. Made me cry and still is. When all is said and done, I would rather have an older dog. Thanks for sharing this! I'll have to share this with my family. They will love it.
Oh My Gosh! Did this ever make me cry. Thank you for rescuing a very special guy and giving him a loving home!!!!!
