Hello everyone!

I'm new to MyCorgi.com! I'm about to become a new Corgi momma! I have wanted one for as long as I can remember. I actually have a stuffed Corgi w/ a collar on it, just waiting for the day I brought one home. Now its almost like a surreal dream that is coming true in about a month!
So I am curious, what are some things that I need to know? I know they are a herding breed and I've done a lot of research! and I mean a llootttt! But I feel it is always good to ask people with experience. I see no Corgi's at the dog park we go too around here, which makes me a little sad. :(
I'm curious if there is any difference between the male and female? I've read that females can be more bossy. My stepdad's co-workers has a male and he's like insanely super hyper. However I suspect she doesn't mentally stimulate her corgi and just takes him for mindless walks. Are females good with other females? We have a 5 yr old Yellow lab that is a female. She also has diabetes and losing her eyesight :( We also have 3 cats? should I expect my little baby to be trying to herd them around the house? That would be such a sight though!
I know Corgi's are dogs that come with BIG personalities... It's something that attracted me to the breed. Little bodies and BIG personalities... just like myself. What else little things should I expect from these clowns? I've read that they are very in-tune with their humans emotions. Is that true? What I'd give to get a lick on the face after a bad day at work! I'm trying to think of some other things but they are just not coming to me this early in the morning! (11am, lol, i'm such a bum!)
I thank you all! I can't wait to hear what you have to say!

Oh how cute and I love the name...it reminds me of a favorite book of mine called The Traveler! Congrats!
lol! They almost look like guinnea pigs when they're that little! :P
They usually say don't put 2 females together but I think since you are introducing the new one at a young age it should be fine. I have cats too and my corgi does chase them occassionally but mostly just wants to be buddies with them and lick them to death. HE LOVES CATS! Corgis do have bery BIG personalities. You have to be prepared to spend time with your corgi, let her RUN RUN RUN and have toys around the house that are mentally stimulating. If you introduce your puppy while she is young (after she is fully vaccinated) to dogs at the dogpark make sure to do it with a few dogs at first so its not too overwhelming. Franklin used to LOVE every dog he met but after a few bad experiences at the dogpark he is now fearful. He still wants to be friends with everyone but he tends to take a lot longer to warm up and gets scared easily if things start getting rough.
Be ready for the corgi crazies....they will be just sitting there and then all of a sudden run around the house like total maniacs, Be ready to laugh A LOT. They are little clowns and the stuff they do will keep you laughing. Be sure to have lots and lots of toys so that your puppy doesn't chew your stuff. I never had a problem with Franklin because he had about a billion toys. And I can't emphasize enough a tired corgi is a happy corgi. A half hour walk on a leash isn't going to do it for these guys, you have to let them run and you have to play play play for AT LEAST AN HOUR. Most behavioral issues come from pent up energy.....get that energy out and you'll have a sweet, funny, happy little friend.
The Corgi Crazies...Totally true. My 9 month old female Callie does that. She runs around anything that can be considered an island...In the kitchen, the couches, the tables, and through the kitchen, into the library, into the family room and around and around she goes. Callie seems to do it when someone leaves for the day, or when someone goes upstairs. She has also been known to do it when someone comes home, or comes down stairs after a long time away...Don't worry about cords though, Callie doesn't even flinch running over my and my mothers computer cords, even though I don't know how she does it...Yes toys are amazing! The more toys, the less she will chew YOUR things. When she does, tell her no, and give her something that is acceptable to chew. Callie hasn't chewed our stuff since the first week of her living in our house. Tired corgi is a happy corgi, and a happy owner. We LOVE to play fetch in this house...=]] Everyone has to take their turn here, because Callie wants to play fetch ALL day. And if Harley is anything like Callie, I would watch her around soft squeaky toys...the squeaker will not stay in long. Also, I know all dogs are different, but be careful with rubber toys, Callie has been known to eat them. She HAD a hedgehog...for about a day...She ate the nose, the ears, and the little pokey looking parts. She also HAD a cupcake...she ate the cherry off of that. We don't give her hollow rubber toys, only VERY thick solid ones. Now, she's also 9 months old, so everything may be different with a puppy...we got Callie at 7 months old, so we missed out on puppy teeth, and puppy only toys. All I know is that Callie's teeth MUST be made out of titanium, because nothing stays intact for long in this house...All her toys that can be in shreds are in shreds, excluding a stuffed pig, that is designed to be basically indestructable. Can't wait to hear more about your beautiful little girl!
Oh heavens!!! lol our lab has A LOT of toys that could be shared with Harley. She's also playful so I think our lab can be a good friend and they can always tire one another out! I can see Harley out doing Aurora though! lol I'm all bout playing! Me and my cat play a game of fetch just bout nightly and he actually does bring his mouse.... balled up pieces of papers... and w/e else he can find to fetch. I plan on doing the kong training with her while she is in her chewy puppy stages.
My step-dad has a coworker that has a male corgi and she was telling him how hyper they are.... after saying she only takes him for 30min walks a day. I facepalmed and said NO WONDER! So now he thinks that ALL corgi's are going to be like that. I can't WAIT to prove him wrong!!!
I can't take her to the dog park! The dog park I plan on taking her too she won't be allowed at until she is 6 months old. Which brings me to a question for y'all... Do your dog parks have large and small? Large is for 28lbs and over, Small is 28lbs and less. Well I don't know what side to put her on! The large dogs are more playful and such... the small dogs are just kind of boring and roam around. I would be worried if I put her in the small side that they wouldn't play with her :( Or put her in large side with her Aunt Aurora! Sooo torn....There is actually a Puggle that can;t be more than 25lbs that plays in the large dog side! That's why I wonder if she would be okay over there too. What do y'all think?
Tomorrow the breeder is going to send me some more pics of her! She turned 3 weeks old yesterday :) I can't wait to see my little baby. My birthday is on Wednesday and that is when mom is going to be putting the deposit on her! Verryyyy excited!!!
For the dogpark, its very hit or miss. Franklin is just under 25 pounds, he's often too big and rough for the dogs on the small dog side but too small for the big dogs. BE VERY CAREFUL if you go to the big dog side. Frank had a group of great friends on the big dog side but one time I went there and two big dogs I wasn't familiar with came in and mauled Franklin and I couldn't get him up and out in time. They were jumping all over me and him and up on me as I tried to hold him over my head to get out. They ended up breaking his foot and not only did that cost me hundreds of dollars and tons of stress (he basically wasn't allowed to move for 3 months), it made him very fearful of ALL large dogs. Also, German Shepherds and Huskies (and other prey driven breeds) tend to view our little corgi bunny butts as real bunnies. Pretty much every dog of those two breeds that Franklin has ever met has stalked and pounced on him and it wasn't until they have him totally down that they realize he's a dog.....I avoid both breeds just to be safe.
Awwww :( poor frank!!! most of the dogs that i see at the park are labs... a few boxers.. a greyhound... 2 bernes mt. dogs. 90% of the time it is the same crowd of people that go to this dog park. I've been watching all the dogs to see how they interact with the others. The only one I don't like is bout the weight size of a corgi... mixed breed... and likes to think she is the queen on the dog park! I would hope that Aurora would become protective over her little niece and if any dog started stuff she'd get her 90lb body in the way! lol
Guinness, my 3 yr old corgi, loves bigger dogs, but is not a fan of small dogs. My cousin and a friend of mine both have great danes, and he loves to run and play with them. Our neighbors had a lab, same thing. He loved her. he will run the fence line in our backyard all day with the german shepherd behind us if he could. However, my mom has a poodle-maltese mix and my grandma has a maltese, and Guinness hates them both. He wants nothing to do with them. From what I know, he doesn't have any bad past experiences with small dogs, he just doesn't like them. Maybe he thinks he's a big dog stuck in a small dog's body!
Finn likes all other dogs, but he's only 5 months old, so he's just happy to play all the time!
Do the dog stuff on purpose, not by accident.
If I had it to do over again, I'd keep a log book of training. I'd list every command I want to teach the dog, and schedule/record training. Make sure everybody in the family is on board with the program and understands what must be done (if different people treat the puppy differently, it's confusing). The logbook thing, of course, is to train YOU how to train the puppy.
Do your research. I recently found a webpage with great instructions for teaching "Leave It!"
Search for "Really Reliable Recall" or "Emergency Recall" (save a special, cordon-bleu treat like bacon for this, a high-value treat that comes ONLY with the emergency recall).
Get a dedicated fanny pack for dog stuff and some small pill bottles for training treats (which should be only big enough to taste; the dog will be getting LOTS of them).
Always make training a fun game for both of you.
My emergency recall word is "Treat!!!!" Works like a charm.....for a corgi, that is.
I went to go see my Harlequin today!! She is absolutely precious. I think she knew that she was mine.. instantly climbed into my lap. She is going to have a BIG personality! I can totally tell! She weeble wobble over to the other puppies during play and would let out her little bark. She would bark to let everyone know that she was still in the room. She loved chasing my fingers! I bring her home on Oct 30th! I absolutely can not wait, she is perfect. Here are some pics from the meeting!

Awwww...what a cutie! Bet you can't wait!
