Please respect your breeders wishes!
Ok folks, I feel the need to go on a little rant today. I have 3 friends now who have gotten pups from a breeder (not all corgi's) on the condition that they not be bred, and then they decided to go against the breeder's wishes and breed them anyway!! Grrrrr!! In my opinion, if the breeder says please do not breed this dog, that is their decision, and if you don't like it, go somewhere else!! Sure, I would've loved to show Frosty in the ring, he was within the standard, just barely, but that's not what my breeder wanted, so we got him fixed. I just think it is irresponsible of novice breeders to get a dog and feel like they know better than their breeder, and they don't care if the puppies will be papered or not, but they want to make more puppies. Sorry for the rant folks, I am just really frustrated with my friends. I am not saying that I think breeding is bad, I am just saying, please respect your breeder's wishes, and if you don't agree with what they have to say, don't get a pup from them, it's rude.

I understand your anger. The woman that I got Calvin from(my cardi rescue (Joanna,Rainy and Calvin) had the guts to advertise how cute pups would be when bred with an Aussie even though he had a neuter contract. 1 week after he came to my house he was neutered! Unfortunately the breeder Calvin came from also did this as to save herself as she was not a good breeder!
I have spayed my own females that I did get to breed when they had traits I didn't want to pass on...bummer ...I have also been very upfront with anyone that I have contacted about a female pup and my intentions!

Right, if there was a written contract, someone can turn them in and something can be done in the legal system. Waffle would have made an EXCELLENT stud dog, but alas. He had one testicle and needed to be neutered. I wouldn't breed him anyway! I'm not responsible enough. ...Though, honestly, if he did have both of his testicles, I wouldn't own him. My breeder probably would have ended up showing him or someone else would have adopted to show/breed him. I almost got into a fight with my boyfriend about people who breed dogs and do it for the money and only the money. I found a corgi on Craigslist in my college area (http://blacksburg.craigslist.org/pet/1991368308.html) and told him I was pretty upset about it, and when he asked why, I got into responsible vs typical breeding. Then he got really defensive because his family got a pure bred Samoyed from some backyard breeder. It's really a terrible thing and not what is best for any of the dogs at all. Unless you are trying to make a new breed [with a PURPOSE, not just to look cute] I don't think dogs unfit for work or show should be bred at all. Ever. (Making a new breed would justify breeding a golden with some sort of hound, for example, to produce a hound that is not adverse to retrieving. Or something.) I'm sorry three of your friends did this. Some people just don't understand and don't want to understand.

I would like to clarify that I'm aware breeding a pug with a beagle to produce a Puggle is NOT making a new breed. But many breeds were bred with one or two specific other breeds long enough to maintain those same traits in future generations. For example, the Chesapeake Bay was a mix between Newfies and labs, I think.

I had a friend who wanted to produce Puggles and my question is....what do they do with the pups that don't turn out like the cute Puggles they are breeding them for?????

Someone will adopt it because it is unique and different, don't worry. Then they might breed it because it's so unique!

"In a perfect world" I do have a hard time believing this just as what happens to the labordoodles when they don't have the right coats... guess I'm being harsh but I don't believe that they get adopted:( but more likely lose their lives or maybe be kept for breeding...not a good life either way:(

Yeah, you're right. They're just as likely to get dumped or sheltered or bred to death than adopted by a family that may or may not actually love them. UNLESS, they produce Puggles or Labradoodles or whatever unholy abomination of dogs and then legitimately cared for the puppies instead of viewing them as little bundles of cash. I'm sure that there a few of those types of "designer dog" breeders somewhere. Maybe.

No one will adopt them, that is the reason our shelters are packed and millions of animals are euthanized every year. NO one wants them. I just wish people could understand that very few people are interested in your cute dogs puppies, and those that are typically throw it away when the first bump in the road hits.
I am sorry to the poaster about your friends. I would not be able to remain friends with people like this. Maybe they should try working ina shelter for a week or two. Or maybe in the backroom where they are killed. Ignorant...

Okay, how about those "breeders" that sold those pets to your "friends"? If they had any real merit as breeders, first off they might have never placed those dogs in those homes, knowing that they might not be altered. Next, are there contracts? How well written are they and did the breeder hold the papers until proof of altering?
An breeder worth their weight, would have placed with a contract, followed through and if needed, removed the dogs after finding out that they had been lied to. Been there done that---have a 5 year old girl in my home that I did remove from a home where she was originally placed as a show and performance prospect. Didn't follow through then a few other things were said and I had her returned.
Make money-ha! Let's see, one litter cost me an $1800 emergency c-section at the local emergency clinic, resulted in 6 puppies. Kept one, one to stud fee pick and four more left. After all the parents health testing, puppies health care and such, I wasn't even anywhere in the red. I think someone out in corgi land did a little cost analysis on raising a litter and it is mind blowing. The only way you make money is by not spending any nor standing behind what you produce. Granted the people you are dealing with have a very different view on what dogs actually are and will use the old " but so and so did it and made tons of money". At that point, I think you are doing the right thing by no longer associating with them. Sad that most of those type of people will never learn nor want to learn.

I dont know if you can blame the breeders with out knowing the entire story, and no breeder is ever going to get it right 100% of the time. You may turn away a really responsible pet owner because they lack something you consider essential. You might also trust your pup to someone who appears to be a great dog owner, and then be upset with the decision after. You cannot control those you sell puppies to, it is a balance of trust and legal paperwork. You are right in having a contract. I have known breeders who require vet recommendations, home checks, and photos of the dogs for years later to ensure the dogs were still alive, well kept, and with the same family. The most you can do is hope they will keep their word and threaten to take the dog.

Hey breeders out there, do you even spay/neuter your dogs (provided they are old enough) before you will allow a family to take them? Just curious, if I was adopting an adult dog, even a show dog I would not mind at all if a breeder first said, I will sell you the dog, but he/she has to be fixed first.

I'm not a breeder. I work in a shelter where those puppies end up. NONE of our animals are going to reproduce! We neuter the boys ASAP. Girls are sent home with a $200 spay deposit. Bring her back and we'll spay her and refund the $, or show up with proof of spay for the refund. (All kitties and bunnies are neutered before leaving.) No exceptions. Do any breeders do that? A refundable deposit? It should be pretty high to matter to someone willing to pay out for a pure bred dog from a breeder.
