Personally I wouldn't have a puppy spayed or neutered before they were at least 6 months old. A lot of breeders recommend waiting until they're closer to a year.
We've decided to wait until 1 year just to make sure everything develops properly structurally. Most agility trainers recommend 1 year and after Aber's back problems, I'm now nervous to do another one at 6 months. They do recover more quickly the earlier they're done, but I'm convinced waiting is better--unless you get behavioral issues like spraying or aggression or humping--just because the sex hormones do have something to do with the dog's overall development physically.

We got Ginger spayed at just a little over 5 months. She did great! The vet recommended waiting until she was done with her boosters but before 6 months.
