I tried looking up IVDD in previous discussions, but all the search brings up is specific comments. It would be super cool if the search brought up thread titles instead.

That said, they suspect Waffle has IVDD.  The X-ray they took was inconclusive (as they often are) but they don't want to do any more X-rays/tests until next week when he does not have a GI upset.  My concern is that maybe he DOESN'T have GI upset, and he just has first stage IVDD mimicking GI upset. :[  Of course, I'm BEGGING that Waffle doesn't have it at all.

They did a full set of neurologic tests (yay for being at one of 28 vet schools in the country) and his neurologic functions are all good.  The only thing that tipped them off to IVDD is his breed, pain when you press on his thoracolumbar vertebra (the vertebrae that connects his rib cage vertebrae to his lumbar vertebrae) and his reluctance to move.  The thoracolumbar vertebrae is the one most often impacted by IVDD.  Great.

They didn't tell me this yesterday, but I called them today and she said I should be keeping him in strict confinement.  No movement except a 10 min walk on a short leash every day and potty breaks.  She says the movement prevents him from becoming stiffer, otherwise no extra movement at all.

I joined the yahoo group, Orthodogs, and am slowly gathering info on IVDD.  I want to know if any of you have had experiences with IVDD, and if so, how are your dogs doing now?  I don't want a crippled dog for the next 15 years.  He's so young. He's not even 2.  :[

Oh I so hope he's OK.
I know having a Corgi is like having a kid.  When something happens you are worried sick.  I hope waffle will be alright.
I'm hoping too that it isn't IVDD and they are just jumping to that because he is a corgi. It will be interesting to see what the fecal cultures come back as. With the fever and fact that this all occurred shortly after a big raw meal I'd think its more likely that he has a bacterial infection. Since the fever is going down, it sounds like the antibiotics are helping. Bacterial infections can cause most if not all of the symptoms you are describing, they will know for sure once the culture results come back. When do you get those results? Keep us posted!

My thoughts are with you and Waffle. I hope it is just a GI Infection but if not, you have a group here that will help you and Waffle all that we can.

You waiting for Waffle to be in your life for such a long time, I hope you have many happy and healthy years ahead of you both!

Just echoing everyone else's thoughts, that he's just got a bacterial/viral infection to get over, and all will be well.  Best wishes.

Siri got quite sick once, obviously in pain, the only time I ever saw her lay her ears down along her head (like Gwynnie does all the time).  The diagnosis was some kind of pinched nerve in her neck.  After awhile, it just went away and never recurred.

I'm hoping Waffle enjoys such a good outcome.

Hang in there, we're with ya.

Hi Rachel

We're all wondering how Waffle is doing, and you to. Any updates.

Still thinking about you and Waffle.  I keep checking in to see if there is any news on the poor little guy.  :(
There is a wonderful Yahoo Group called Wheel Corgi's.  It is a group of people dealing with mostly either DM or IVDD.  Even if your dog does not have IVDD there are a awesome group of members on there who's dogs do have it and can answer all of your questions.  All of these members have Corgi's in various stages of illness, and as you can see by the name, some are in wheeled carts, which brought them their mobility back.  I recently sold my cart to a woman whose Corgi has beginning stages of DM; Bella was dragging her hind end to get around.  We put Bella in the cart, and OMG the tears flowed out of my eyes to see her roll all around my house.  Please, I encourage you to look into this wonderful, knowledgeable group who only own Corgi's. Disabled dogs can have a full life...  You will be SO glad you joined!  From what I have learned from this group, your dog is too young for DM and I am thinking if I remember right, IVDD too; but, check it out!
Oh Rachel, I am so sorry you are going through this agony. I know that sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach when they told me that Sidney would essentially be crippled for life from his hip dysplasia, and he was only three. With surgery and water therapy and a lot of patience, he's coming along nicely, but I know his life will be different from here on out. Not necessarily bad, but different. Whatever is in the cards for Waffle, he will be fine because he has YOU for a mommy. Hang in there, kid. We're all rooting for you and Waffle.
I did not read all the replies to this but I have deep sympathy for what you are going through.  I don't know how you feel about this or if you've already done so, but I hope you will contact the breeder (if you did purchase Waffle) and let them know exactly what's going on and what the diagnosis is.  Not that this really helps you in any way, I just feel that all breeders need to know whenever there are any health problems with their dogs.  Peace to you.
Rachael I keep checking in for an update.  You and Waffle are in our thoughts!
