Orion will be six months old on September 16th and he's lost all his baby teeth except his upper two canines. His bottom two canines took a long time to come out and were the last teeth to go (his premolars and molars were already growing in a lot by the time they fell out) but his upper canines aren't even loose. His adult canines are coming in and the baby ones show no signs of wanting to come out. I saw a couple baby tooth extractions at the clinic I worked at over the summer and I know if left in there they can cause problems later in life but I'm wondering at what point I should consider having them pulled. I've only seen a few pups with retained baby teeth so I don't have much experience on the subject but I don't want to put him under anesthesia if I don't have to. Does anyone have experience with retained baby canines? If so, did you have to have them pulled or did they finally fall out? I hope they'll fall out, I really don't want to have to get them pulled :/

Here's a picture of them, the adult canines are just starting to come in so maybe the others still have time to fall out (the ones I've seen had the adult teeth all the way grown out already) sorry for the cruddy quality but I didn't want to go through the trouble of taking it on my camera and hooking it up to the laptop so I just took it on my phone and emailed it

Riley had a lower baby canine that didn't fall out. When he went in to be neutered (at 8 months) I had the vet pull the retained baby tooth. No problem. I don't think it would be a good idea to leave the baby tooth in. You might try giving him a bone to chew on. However, a bone didn't help loosen Riley's baby tooth.
When Jack was neutered at 6 months, the vet notes said he still had two baby canines and to watch them, and if they did not come out on their own to let the vet know. They later did fall out, a couple months after that, but I can't say exactly when.
Yeah we have the option of removing retained baby teeth when the dogs get neutered at my clinic but Orion has already been neutered so that's not an option. And I'd prefer not to have to put him under anesthesia if I don't have to so I wonder how long I can wait before deciding he'll need them pulled.
I would bet those will come out on their own as the big tooth comes down. I only worry if the big tooth is completely down and the little one is still very firmly seated. Give him lots and lots of hard stuff to chew on - raw bones, antlers, etc.
If you are really worried, I would recommend calling your vet. They can usually give you information over the phone without you having to come in and its free. I call my vet all the time with questions I have about our cats and dog, and they told me last time that they really appreciate the fact that I call them because it shows that I must really care about my animals.
UPDATE: So today we were playing a rather vigorous game of tug-of-war and I noticed Orion licking his mouth kind of funny afterwards and I looked in his mouth and it was bloody and I found one of the baby canines on the floor so I guess it got ripped out when he was playing :/ It didn't seem at all loose when I posted this yesterday so I hope I didn't do any damage ripping it out with his toy. Hopefully the second one will come out soon and we won't have any problems or have to get them pulled
There was a little shard of tooth still in there and I picked it out with tweezers so hopefully there's nothing left in there. I've been giving him lots of bones to chew so maybe that will help with the last one
